Books about addiction and recovery

Hey guys! I’m new to this app. I appreciate everyone on here sharing their stories. It really helps to know others have gone through or are going through what you are going through.
I was wondering if anyone can reccomend any books that helped them along their sober journey.
TIA
Day 1 and going to sleep sober tonight! However, day 1 is usually easy for me. I tend to forget why I quit drinking around day 14 or so.

Congrats on making the decision to get sober, that’s pretty rad!

I tend to forget the initial struggle as well after some time. This time I journaled what I was going through during the first week so I could read it when I felt I forgot how hard I worked to get here. Not sure if you’re in to that, but it helped me!

As far as books go, I haven’t ready any yet, but “This Naked Mind” is a very popular one around here. I do enjoy watching the author’s podcast videos on YouTube, so I am looking forward to reading the book.

Anyhow, welcome and keep on rockin’!

Allen Carr’s Easy Way to Quit Alcohol. He explains cravings and why they are so hard for people to get through. In my experience it is the Cravings that get me to drink again… I end up drinking just to shut the Cravings up! He offers a unique perspective, not for everyone but it helped me. I also love reading Memoirs of recovering alcoholics, because i can relate to what they’ve been through, and it gives me inspiration to read how they stopped drinking & stay sober.

I am into that. Thank you for the suggestion. I think I would benefit from added a list of all the embarrassing and harmful situations I found myself in prior to quitting.

I will definitely order these 2 books. Thanks for the suggestions. I also agree the cravings, along with bordome, are what get me to purchase and consume another bottle of wine. I gave up smoking 10 years ago. I found the act of pretending to put a cigarette up to my lips (with no actual cigarette in hand) and inhaling on air during stressful moments actually helped me quit smoking. I knew smoking was detrimental to my health. It took much longer for me to realize and accept how insidious alcohol is for my health. I need to overcome the cravings and bordome with new habits.

I own the book! I need to find a meeting. It can be discouraging when living in a small town full of judgemental people. I’m nervous about it.

Hey, I totally understand that feeling. After a while I was able to overcome that fear. Fear and addiction go hand in hand. There is an app called meeting guide that can help you locate meetings. Overwhelming at first but if you are an alcoholic they have an amazing ability to feel like home. Good luck. Keep grinding out days, the fog lifts then the real good stuff starts to come. Screw those judge mental people, unless it will mess up your work situation there is nothing to fear from them.

Thanks for the information about the app. I was trying to look up local meetings yesterday to no avail. Starting day 3 after a great night sleep and I have so much energy this morning. Alcohol robs us of so many precious things.
