So I’ve been alcohol free for 25 days. Woot woot. Longwst stretch in 20 years. At night, watching tv, i find i still drink alot, now its just tea and sparkling water. Maybe i just always need fluids? Anyways, im bored. Time flew by when i was drinking. I have too much time and yet not enough after my 8-5. I want to workout, read a book i started months ago, but i cant seem to find the motivation. Im craving socialization.
I can’t recommend the working out enough… it’ll release endorphins which will make you feel much better. I always tell myself to just start and if after 10 minutes i want to stop i will… i never quit after 10 minutes. Best wishes
The first few weeks your body is learning how to function without the booze.
Your gonna feel all kinds of out of sorts,
Something that’s been helping me a lot as of late and really was helpful in early sobriety Is create a daily do it my fucking self list. Which is a honey do list for yourself,
I try to check off every box daily, to create a routine, It helps with my ADD too and avoidance in overindulging in one thing like video games or guitars, but it also keeps me in check and accountable to myself,
Mine might look like this on a normal day.
Get up 630 AM
Leave at 7 for work
At work 730, (separate lost for work)
If no overtime home at 430
Take medications
Music practice space 1 hour (separate list)
Exercise time varies depending on goals 15min - 1hr
Eat dinner
Shower get wound down
Entertainment time with what’s leftover. Video games movies, whatever.
Bed around 10 pm
The nice thing about the list is it keeps me focused to complete tasks and I add or subtract based on the day , or adjust my time constraints if I have other things to do, but I try to hit all my goals for that day,
Yours might be exercise 10 minutes, hobbies 10 minutes, tv time 2 hours, but as time progresses you might adjust It, to make sure you get everything
It sounds ridiculous I scoffed at first but it works for me. And if your a tech savvy or phone person you can put it on your phone, for me I have to write it out
Join a gym, walking group, aerobic, kick boxing or yoga classes. You can make sober workout friends. That will motivate you to workout.
Awesome!! LOVE this!!!
I second the exercise class idea. If you are not into yoga, I recommend camp gladiator. Great fun outdoor workouts, community feel. Or maybe join a gym or the YMCA.
And there is always AA.
I would like to make some new friends too. I think that is just one of the hard things about bring an adult. People just dont seem to want to socialize as much it seems.
On another note, embrace the boredom. Conquer your to do list. Clean the house and yard.
I decided to learn a second language
and I looove it. Great way to spend my time! And fun too. Initially, I downloaded Duolingo and started watching videos on YouTube. Once I realised how much I enjoyed it, I started classes too and now have a trip booked to go live in Spain and study Spanish for 3 months! It’s so exciting and I can’t wait
Is there a language you’re interested in learning?
Thank you all for some very good suggestions! I asked and this wonderful community comes to gether. I love you guys. Thanks for supporting me thru this journey.
Time is interesting. A moment can pass and feel as if it’s 10 years, conversely, 10 years can pass in a moment. Time moves on the same for all of us, only difference is our perception.
There are times in our lifes where we want to speed up the unpleasant parts and slow down the good parts; but the opposite usually happens. We wake up one day and find ten years has passed and we’re left wondering, where did the time go? How many more days will I wake up to before I run out of time?
I find boredom to be a reminder that my time is finite and even though it may be an unpleasant part that I wish to speed up, I should enjoy every moment.
Habit is a strong tool on a positive spectrum. I find it easier if you go to the gym for the first time and after that you’ll want to keep going and it’ll eventually be you’re habit.
Exercise definitely helps me with the mental health side of things that’s for sure!!
I started with lots of walks and listening to music. Also TONS of sparkling water. Puppy cuddles. I didn’t feel a lot of motivation to do much else. And lots of reading here. It helped fill the socialization I was craving. Then I started to add in other things. Meditation. Cooking nice meals. ( such a good way to unwind) Guitar lessons. Reading. I barely ever watch tv these days. I’m more active in my recovery. On some days if it’s all you can do to not drink that’s okay too. You’ll find new hobbies. Try new things.
I’m happy you are here
I like fishing, playing basketball, listening to music, hiking and playing guitar.
I like your list of hobbies! Very helpful might try some myself for sure
I actually thought about doing free group guitar lessons via zoom here to help aspiring guitar players and hobbyists reach some of their goals with some guidance, plus it would be good for me to help get back into teaching lessons again at a shop for pay.
Problem I run it into besides time constraints and time zones, is everyone is at a different skill set, where as one might be like still working on basic chords to learn to strum their favorite songs, other people are like hey, can you teach me inversion triads, I think if I gather enough interest and a ideal path I might still give it a go
You could always offer different classes weekly- beginner and on
Just like a yoga studio.
If people can join, cool. If not you can just play

I got into an old hobby… Think about life before drugs and maybe you can reconnect. Work at getting unbord just like ya would anything else. Getting older and sober does make it hard to find something to do because we aren’t used to it lol
A thought I been kicking around if I can ever clear my plate of my half a million other projects, I don’t lose focus I just have many side quests.
would be getting a general consensus most hobbyist guitar players are interested in learning chords and shapes to play their favorite songs so starting with a what songs do you wanna learn? Common progressions strumming patterns, things like that
What are some easy songs?
