Bug egg husks on ma frozen raspberry

Fascinating.

I wonder what they were??

Remember when you used to get caterpillars inside vegetables? Those were the days.

We get a veg box delivered from a local gardening project and sometimes find a caterpillar or a slug. Usually while preparing the food fortunately, rather than mid- bite!

I was talking my friend about this last night and she said her mam used to mash the caterpillars up with the cauliflower :pensive::nauseated_face: put her off cauliflower for years apparently
Caterpillars get kept as pets in this house
We have a bush in the back garden that gets covered in magpie moth caterpillars, they eat the whole bush and it regenerates every year, then more caterpillars come next year and the cycle continues. It’s like a magpie moth larder
The coccons are really interesting they look like wasps and they wriggle if you touch them, its to deter birds from eating them as they think they’re wasps so leave them alone. They’re really beautiful when they hatch, they just look like butterflies and they come in the house in the summertime so we have loads flying around in here :heart:
My daughter loves them.

Those eggs are most likely Green Veggie Bugs, or Green Stink Bugs.
Trissolcus wasps also love to parasitise the eggs.

We get given veges off a old man’s allotment. Totally organic and they are COVERED in bugs. Like hundreds in every crevice of some broccoli. There is only so many times you can wash it before you just think, meh, extra protein.

I wanted to do a post about the magpie moths so I thought I’d just add to this one instead of making a new thread about it

So, it’s that time of year again!!:raised_hands:

Theres currently 3 flying around the sitting room right now.

One is really interesting, hes missing the rest of his abdomen, idk if it hatched this way or got injured but it doesn’t seem to bother him at all. Infact, hes the most sprightly out of the bunch, very friendly too, as you can see…

Can you make out his back part? Well it’s missing, hes not squashed or anything which makes me think it’s some sort of defect, but again its not bothering him, hes perfect as he is :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

He went onto the back of my phone and was looking into the camera, I really (like desperately…) wanted to get a close up of his face so it was like that moth meme (lamp??) But it wasnt ment to be… :disappointed: bu you can kinda make it out

My little girl thought it was hilarious

Here he is with one of his bros

Cool aren’t they? :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Those are super cool!! My kids currently have three monarch butterfly caterpillars munching away on milkweed in a cage. It’s fun to watch them grow, become a chrysalis, and then a butterfly.

It is it’s so much fun we get hundreds of them on the bush in the back garden, I feel really lucky that they’ve decided to take over that bush they come every year

I love leaving the door open and them coming in the house, they have a really gentle flutter when they fly around, they’re lovely to watch.

They’re very docile though, I’m not sure if that’s because they’re months so they become more active at night? Or if they’re just like that in nature :woman_shrugging:

Anyway, all I know is that I love them :smiling_face_with_three_hearts::rofl:

It’s a great activity/experience for kids too I bet yours are so excited waiting for them to evolve?
