I’m on day 2 of check-in. Still feeling ashamed and embarrassed. Wishing it’s been at least a month already of sobriety, so I can feel proud again.
Try setting your goals a little smaller. I know it’s silly, but that’s one reason I like this app. The little badges/medals for something that seems so inconsequential, but it’s not. One day at a time. Stay forward focused. The past can’t change, but each day forward can. The days will add up. Keep your chin up, you’ve got this.
Be proud of yourself anyway, each day we turn up and put a decent shift in to stay clean and sober is a proud day.
Great work on day 2
as your days build up your feelings will subside, before you know it you’ll have a month under your belt. Every day sober is a beautiful one and another step forward on your journey
wishing you positivity and so much support ![]()
Well done on day 2 thats something to be proud of in its own right.
never give up on giving up.
Day 2 is a good achievement. It means you went a whole 24 hours, and that you are still continuing…
So, congratulations on that.
I’m getting close to 40 days (it’s 38 or 39; I need to check). But, to be honest with you, I don’t feel proud of that, and I still suffer from some shame about my past actions…
But, that feeling of shame grows less and less each day - not because I’m going a longer period without a setback - but, because I’m growing in my understanding of certain things. Here’s several things to think about:
- You recognize your need to be sober, and you want to be sober - that’s huge in itself. So many with addiction can’t even get to that point of awareness.
- You took actions to be sober - you’re on Day 2, and you checked in with us to let us know that. That’s great stuff, because you’re seeking community with us (and, we are all stronger together).
- You can be proud of just those two facts - you don’t have to wait to feel proud - because you’re already taking the steps of a winner, of a sober human being.
Just keep doing the actions that help you to go to bed sober each night. THOSE ACTIONS are what you can be proud of, not just a certain number of days sober…
But, like someone said, as your days of sobriety increase, you will naturally become more proud of that as well.
One last thought… I’ve found that my shame is kind of a lie that my brain just tells me, so that I will give up trying. Each time I don’t give up, but instead keep going, my shame loses a bit more of its power.
We are all rowing the same boat together. And, we all know that you can do this…
Hang in there. It’s just one day at a time.
Ain’t no day 30 without a day 2, just keep rolling! ![]()
I have been working on being alcohol-free for 30+ years. Congrats to be back where you are. Over all that time, I definitely learned that it’s far better to work on moment-by-moment, day-by-day. For me, a goal beyond the moment just didn’t work well.
Welcome to this world. It’s a great place to lay things down.
@Blueskies12 Congrats on day 2, You can do it ![]()
@EthanHunt Well said !
Thank you!
Well done for making it here my friend. I’m right here with you on day 2 again. I share your feelings of shame and regret, though trying to be kind to myself and take things one day at a time.
Thank you! To you as well. What is your story, if you’d like to share?
I have been quitting on and off for a number of years now. My problem is binge drinking and some associated impulsive/compulsive behaviour which has had some potentially quite serious consequences over the years.
I managed nearly 2 years sober until December last year when I had two episodes of drinking. I thereafter went another 8 months before drinking at the weekend there.
Day one for me friends! Happy to be here with you guys, coming off a 2 year relapse after nearly 2 years sober before that. Glad to have people in the same boat, nothing to be ashamed of, and our sober days are not lost just because we stumble and fall. Raising an ice cold Diet Coke to day 2 for you guys and day 1 in the books for me!
Everyday sober is an accomplishment! I tried to keep that in mind. I’m a month sober today I know the feeling of the first few weeks. I kept wishing I was sober for longer as well.
“Ugh - why has it only been a week??”
But a month has passed and September to October will be another one.
Each day, month, and year will bring more clarity and strength.
Wishing you a beautiful start to sobriety ![]()
Day 2 for me! Mixed emotions today one minute hopeful, one minute reflecting on the past/anxiety about it. I’ve been here before so I know for me this is normal to have emotions go up and down. Just trying to focus on one thing at a time today and I know with each day of sobriety these emotions will normalize and calm down.
