The drive home after a long day is so hard. I find myself driving past the liquor store and wanting to stop so bad. How do I find different outlets besides alcohol because I don’t wanna give in into my cravings?
Welcome! Can you take a different route home? Sometimes making one little change can give us that extra oomph we need. ![]()
Music works for me, depending on the song of course. Music helps shift my mind onto something else..the good thing about cravings is that they pass…hang in there..good luck
Stop telling yourself that you deserve that drink after working hard! I like to have either a candy bar or some ice cream if the craving hits. Helps every time. Also I realized that when I would drink I just enjoyed the carbonation really so I replaced beer with a fridge stocked with La Croixs or Bubblys. Helps tremendously even if it takes a whole 8 pack of them.

What helped me was talking on the phone to people in my recovery network. I’d get so caught up in the conversation, that I’d pass all the liquor stores without noticing them.
This cravings call for building new habits and a new reward / relax system.
Go for a walk around the block before driving home. Have a snack. Take a different route. Reward yourself with a bubble bath and a scented candle at home. Buy yourself flowers instead of beer. Do something NICE for yourself.
Speaking from experience, it helps and changes your focus with time.
You could
- workout
- walk
- AA/NA meeting
- cook a nice meal
- candy (reward yourself for a hard day’s work with something other than beer)
- visit a loved-one
New way to unwind is needed I think
I like to order out delivery. Or buy myself a small gift, usually recovery related to motivate myself.
Once I got over a year no alcohol my cravings just became a thought I say no to
You also might need to build a sober network to remind you why you stay sober
Keep reading and posting. ![]()
