Detox or sickness?

I am day 8 of no alcohol after many years of daily or every other day binge drinking. For the past 4 days I have had achy muscles, no energy and recently a persistent dry cough and sore throat. My husband said it’s probably detox but I can’t find any information that says detoxing would cause the cough and sore throat. Just curious if anyone detox/withdrawal mimicked a cold/flu. Thanks.

Hi, congratulations on day 8! Have you tested for Covid?

I had a lot of symptoms for over 2 weeks, but not sore throat and coughing. I hope you get better soon.

Thank you, Im sure this will pass soon and no I haven’t been tested, I haven’t left the house since I quit drinking and especially being sick like this. I’m taking all my natural remedies just in case it’s a cold. I had Covid back in January and I don’t feel anything like I did then that was awful. This is more like a seasonal cold/mild flu like symptoms which is why my husband thought maybe it is just my body’s response to the detox process.

It’s probably not a withdrawal symptom per se, but certainly could be a byproduct of quitting. Our bodies go through crazy changes when we stop ingesting poison and the healing sometimes hurts. Or could be a cold. Either way, if you don’t drink, it will go away sooner than later!

Yeah. Easy to chalk everything up to recovery, but sometimes it’s as simple as we caught a cold!

It might be. Things can be a bit weird as our bodies get back to normal. But if we stay sober, it can be the last time we gotta go through it, then enjoy lots of healthy, hangover free mornings.

In any case, ride it out and don’t be afraid to check in with a doctor! Sleep plenty and stay hydrated. Hope you feel better soon.

Now that you mention it, in 4 years of sobriety I think I’ve caught one cold. :man_shrugging:
