Does anyone have any tips?

I just started to try and quit SH, I’ve been doing it for a few years now, it isn’t the kind with knives and stuff (I don’t want to go into detail about how I used to do it) and I am wondering if anyone has any advice on how to stop

Hello and welcome Chaos :star_struck:

A few things I’ve tried, some work sometimes, some don’t sometimes. Getting something tight (like an elastic band) around your wrist and snapping it when you feel a compulsion. The instant pain gives some relief.

Delaying - telling yourself “i will do it in ten minutes” and even if you do, next time you have to increase the delay. Keep doing this until you delay for a day and say “I’ll do it in the morning” sometimes by that point the urge has passed.

The one that has worked for me more than any other was recommended by a psychologist. Be kind to the place you choose to damage. For me it was my face. So spending money on it - creams lotions potions facials - whatever, made me hesitate as there is an added layer of wasting much needed money.

I also think medication helps if you want to go down that route. A high dose of SSRI totally stopped those thoughts.

Also, I have acrylic nails to stop me slicing my skin with my thin nails. This def works for me.

I hope you find something that works for you. I know how exhausting and frustrating it is.

Remember: one minute/hour/morning at a time :light_blue_heart:

Welcome to the community @ChaosIsMyName
There are many at the site who SH.
( Actually everyone bc alcohol, drugs etc … )
Many do self harm as you’re speaking of it.
Using the search bar you can find active or past threads where members have talked about it, discussed it, written about it.
There’s lots of support here for you. Many have set a timer for SH.
One member has chosen on occasion to use a sharpie pen marker on herself instead of something more harmful.
The checking in daily to maintain focus is exactly that and another way to get quite a bit of support because you are more visible in the community. Again, welcome to the community and good luck with what you want to accomplish.

Welcome to TS. My daughter used to sh quite badly and the suggestions I was going to make that helped her @Techno_Tequila has mentioned, so I’ll echo them, especially the elastic band. As with everything, everyone is different in what works for them. There’s support on here for you as @Alisa has mentioned which I’m sure will help you and to chat with people going through/experienced sh. Wishing you all the best moving forward :people_hugging:
