Driving with Potholes

I bought a sports car with the money I saved by quitting cigarettes and alchohol. I’m excited about it and drive it a lot. It’s a form of meditation for me. There are only two seats. Sometimes I drive with my wife. Sometimes I drive with my son. Sometimes I drive with my higher power. I’m never alone. It brings me joy and a peaceful mind. I try random roads out in the country mostly. Some roads are mostly smooth with gentle curves. Some are very curvy and a little bumpy. There are always pot holes here and there either way but I always enjoy the experience.

I try to avoid potholes when it’s safe. Sometimes they are unexpected and there is no choice and you have to take them head on. Either way, you have to make real choices when they come up. There are always going to be potholes even on the best road. It doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the ride. You just have to stay on the road.

I’m 123 days sober today and 5725 miles on my drive. Life is good! Poholes are part of it. I try to drive different roads, but I’m always on the same good path. Good driver… not much of a anologist though.

Update 5/19/26:

Today I am 145 days sober and no smoking. This is my ride. It’s not an ego thing. I don’t feel that I’m better than anybody because I drive it. It’s an achievement award. One I’ve wanted since I was a kid. I’ve put 7238 miles on it since 3/11/2026. Most of them driving without a planned destination, other than Dollar General. The payment is equal to the money I save monthly by not smoking or drinking. My wife loves our drives together, top up or top down. We drove to Joe Wheeler State Park in Alabama for lunch that day. Didn’t see this coming in Rehab. A gift from my higher power for sure. Make a commitment and stick to it no matter what. You never know what the future will bring.
