Entering my first sober weekend

This will be my first weekend of trying to be sober. I’m what you call a weekend warrior. I’m a huge binge drinker. Im in my 30s and have been self imploding every weekend since I was 19. I’m from a family who are heavy drinkers. We are all close and get together often and drink together. I will be with them this weekend and the impulse to join the party it’s going to be difficult. But I know where the night will go if I have a drink. Wish me luck I hope I can make it though the weekend.

Welcome to the community Jamie

First weekend sober - i send you strength and love my friend. Early sobriety is very difficult and hard enough. Would you be able to skip this get together? It may be better to not put yourself in triggering situations. We need support during our sobriety.

If you are unable to get out of this for some reason, keep us in your pocket and reach out for support. Make sure you have plenty of non alcoholic drinks available to chose from so you are less tempted to join in with the drinking. Have a exit plan in place - leave early or find a space where you can go for a breather.

Take your time to read around - this is a very supportive non judgmental community. Lovely group of people to have in your corner who totally understand the struggle of addiction.

I wish you much luck and hope to see you around.

I thought about that but we are helping my grandpa move and I have a truck. Makes moving easier. Maybe I will just head home after we move and not stick around for the family hangs . Thanks for the advice guys. I really need to see this though.

Already feel irritable I know the drink will help. I’m really trying. I’m dedicated trying to fill this void right. Is the irritability normal

Totally normal. Keep busy. If you can, go for a walk, a drive or take yourself to a movie. Other ways to stay busy
…read threads here and interact
…play games in your phone
… Puzzles
… If you have hobbies or sports that you like to do…work on them
…work out with YouTube or at the gym

Just don’t let that voice win. This won’t last and you will be that much stronger for resisting. Just focus on getting through minute by minute :pray:t4::muscle:t4:

Ps …make sure you have plenty of non alcoholic beverages available for yourself

That’s kinda hard man. I appreciate the family and drinks, and the need to help Grandpa move, but this early on, perhaps you can find a reason to bow out if you don’t wanna face the question about booze to early on in sobriety.
If you do stay and make it through, good on ya, that would be a test, I’m just not sure testing yourself so early on is wise for your success.

Please come back and let us know how it all went and I wish you the most strength to be successful.

Best of luck on the move grandpa!

If you’re serious about your sobriety DON’T GO! There is no reason you have to go!! None. First weekend sober. Second weekend sober. First month sober. I would NOT go.
But that’s just me. And I’m sure I’m not alone.
:pray:t2::heart:

Made it though guys. Thanks for the positive support. Got my grandpa all set up. I was a little grouchy to everyone. But it was actually a good test it was hard but not everyone was drinking made it that much easier. Now I just have the rest of the night once I get home and not falling to my usual weekend triggers. I’m way too tired of my usual behavior. I don’t want to fall into my usual habits of calling the wrong people and not getting any sleep. Thanks again guys!

So happy that you made it through your family time without drinking! That’s a milestone… one of many to come. I hope you find ways to get through the night. Maybe it’s a movie you’ve been wanting to check out or a project you’ve been wanting to start? We’re here for you!

Look at you go… you went to a very stressful situation and made it out super early in your sobriety. That shows you’ve got all the strength to keep it up. It’s 7pm and I’ve already got my sparkling water, Netflix show ready to go and relaxing. I hope you get to do the same.

Time to become a sober warrior  And you can do that too!

Like others already have mentioned: it’s very difficult to stay sober when surrounded by drinkers. Even more when you used to be drinking with them. If you would hsve a longer stretch of sober days it could be possible but now it’s aiming for a relapse.
My advice would be do not be around drinkers the first few months of your recovery. I also avoided restaurants, pubs, festivals, wine section of the supermarket, etc.

I just read you are going to help your grandpa moving, that is a sweet thing to do! If you are driving that truck you cannot drink and maybe go home straight after you helped him?

Aaahh, I was to late with my advice  You made it through! :confetti_ball:
Grouchy isn’t bad because you where a sober grouchy, well done for that! :facepunch:

Today I will hit 6 days. That is the longest stretch of not drinking and doing other substance in a long long long time. I did not think posting my worries about yesterday would have had so much advice and support. Thank you guys. This is the best I have felt on a Sunday morning in I don’t know how long. No feeling to fix the hangover with a morning beer and oj. Just the oj today. Seriously did not think this app would be so supportive. I really appreciate it

Nicely done!! Isn’t it amazing how good you can feel?! And what makes it even better - how much time and energy you have for things, instead of feeling like garbage and biding time for the hangover to pass!

Enjoy!!!
