It was or is a New England thing too. Growing up we always called it turnip. Until I left or grew up I learned they are rutabaga. Turnips are the purple and white root veggies. I love them too. Try mashing them with carrots. They’re great! Now you got me googling turnips and rutabaga. Might as well google parsnips too.
Although they are both members of the brassica family, the rutabaga is believed to be a hybrid of a turnip and a cabbage; whereas a turnip is, well, just a turnip . … Flavour-wise, rutabagas are sweeter than turnips , which have a sharper flavour.
The texture is actually really meat like, my kids couldn’t believe it wasn’t meat. It needs spices added to it for sure. I used taco spices. Maybe amazon has it, if that’s an option for you? I work at a vegan restaurant and we have it in packages there, I got brave and tried it finally
