Gambling addiction. How to stop?

Hi guys. I am new here. I am 31 years old. I am a gambling addict suffering with this nightmare since 6 years now. I feel so hopeless i am in debt and i have lost so much money to this addiction. Sometimes it feels like there is no way out of this endless cycle. I stop myself for a few days about 5-6 days i am good and feel like i can beat this, but i go back down the same hole everytime. I am starting to lose hope now. I have been gambling so much since 6 years now, the best i had gone was 80 days without gambling back from jan 2023 to march 2023. I hope i can match that or go better this time. Day 1 today.

Hi welcome to the community :raising_hand_woman:

With most addictions, they have something in common which is to not have that first drink - not have that one bet- because that one is is like tipping a ball off the top of a hill … It will just keep rolling until it crashes at the bottom.
One day at a time just stay away from making that first bet, don’t log in to any sites or go to any shops.
You can also put your name on the no gambling site which will stop you from being able to bet again.
My brother had to do this.

Good to have you with us :slightly_smiling_face:

I did this years ago as i had a gambling addiction before the drinking and it definately helped… @Nedperera you can also ask your bank to block your debit card/ credit cards for use on gambling sites…

Hello, I’m also a compulsive gambler, are you attending meetings and what blocks do you currently have in?

Hello, id advise you to go onto a website called Gamblock and Gamstop they block you from using gambling websites. Also your bank can also put blocks on your account when you try and deposit funds.

It’s a hard addiction.
Im over 800 days clean from it all now. Had lost a lot of money. Luckily I made it out and have not looked back.
I still get triggered and go on betting sites to look at odds and what ifs but I’m not going back.
Things to get better if you stay clean.

Im doing so much better now and I used to have insanely amount of debt due to gambling. It’s behind me now. The key is to tell someone and have them help you. Hold you accountable. Monitor your activity

Thats right. Its important to avoid that first bet. It always starts for me like i think i can control it, let me try and deposit some of my money and then i will stop, but i never realise that i cant stop and when i lose, i end up emptying my bank account. Yes i have blocked myself from a lot of sites, just this one site that gives free money, so i am unable to block myself from it

Luckily i dont have a credit card, i never applied because of my habit, i knew i would be in deep trouble if i had extra money i didnt earn. I did get a few loans though, but its not too much, i should be able to cover my loan in a month or two.

@KingA Hi. I havent attended any meetings yet. I am from india so there are not many physical meetings here. Not many casinos either, i gamble online. I just downloaded an app from the play store that blocks apps, will see how it goes. What about you? How long have you been a compulsive gambler?

Thanks i will definitely try it. I saw gamblock, it is a paid app. Downloaded a free app on the play store and put in blocks for the apps i use, it doesnt let me open them. Will see how it goes.

You just got to keep trying to stop ultimately. There are online meetings you can attend if that’s easier but if you’re in a main city in India there maybe face to face meetings? Plenty other good advice above also

Wasn’t easy and I wouldn’t say I’m completely healed but it’s progress. Thank you
