Getting through the first week

Any advise or tips for the first week/first pay check in recovery? This always is my fall down when I get cash in my hand :sob:

Its pretty common for paydays to be a trigger… it was for me too. For the 1st little while in my recovery, i had to spend the majority of my money right away so that i was practically broke lol I would pay all my bills and then go spend my money on household stuff, things that Ive always wanted to buy but never had money for in my addiction, groceries, a meal out, etc.

If that wasnt possible for me to, i would find someone i trust to hold onto my money until the craving passed.

And if i couldnt find anyone to do that, i would do everything in my power to not use/drink. Id hit a meeting (in person or online). Sometimes Id do 2 in a row if need be. Use distraction like a hobby, do some self care, play that tape to the end (Remember ur reasons for why u quit). Go to be early. Anything to not pick up

Honestly, payday was a HUGE trigger for me too. I had to start planning ahead because just hoping I’d make the right decisions when I had cash wasn’t enough for me.

I did a lot of things that helped, but what worked for me may not work for everyone. The biggest thing I can say is recognize that payday is a trigger for you and make a plan before the money hits. Get your bills and necessities handled, keep yourself busy, and if possible, let someone you trust know you’re struggling with it.

Just focus on getting through that first payday sober. Then the next one. You got this.
