Does anyone have some advice for someone coming back to the gym after a few years without much exercise? Iā€™m trying to take it slow because Iā€™m a little afraid I might hurt myself but itā€™s frustrating to be struggling to lift 135 when I could rep 275 before.

Donā€™t worry about what you did beforeā€¦ take it slow with good form. What are you looking to do? Strength, cardio, lose weight?

My cardio is actually in really good shape - better than I usually am, and I do some cardio every day. Itā€™s mostly the strength training that has me worried. The past 2 and a half years without working out has resurfaced some minor injuries in hips and shoulders and I worry every time I lift something over my headā€¦ trying to take it real slow until I feel comfortable again. Like PT type exercises mostly until I feel strong enough - thatā€™s what the doctor recommends me since thereā€™s not much they can do about things unless it gets worse.

Just the usual, I guess!

Do you stretch? I started with stronglifts 5x5 when i got back into lifting. Itā€™s a lot of squatting though and if your hips and shoulders are injured barbell work wouldnā€™t be a good fit.

You could give up the barbell for dumbells though and do more bodybuilding/ isolation work. There are plenty of great routines to be followed either way.

Maybe try a full body workout 3 days a week with your cardio/stretching on your days off. Try using dumbbells first like Dan said and build up some of those stabilizer muscles. Add some weight each workout. Than when your ready get back to your heavier compound exercises. Good luck :crossed_fingers:

Built like a house! Good work dude.

Thanks Pal. I used to look like an outhouseā€¦

This was back in my heavy drinking days. I looked like a fat old lady. I have that on my phone so I can look at it every day so I donā€™t go back to it.
Best,

I just went looking for it because I was certain that I did. Alas, I donated like 90% of my clothes before moving out here and it mustā€™ve wound up in the bag. Never wouldā€™ve gotten rid of it on purpose. I had since cut the sleeves and it was a special occassion gym shirt. Always good for a few glares from people taking shit too seriously.
