Health question

Hi everyone. I will start off by saying that I realize what I’m about ask if best reserved for a qualified healthcare professional but I’d like to hear from people who may have experienced a similar situation. Right before I stopped drinking, about two weeks ago, I had a metabolic blood test and found out that my liver function numbers are elevated and out of normal range. I know this is from drinking and I’ve been drinking nightly for about two years. After stopping, I feel much better, appetite is back, and not feeling any ill effects. I guess what I’m trying to ask is, has anyone else had their liver tests results improve over time after quitting drinking or is the damage basically permanent. I also realize it depends from person to person. Thanks and happy holidays!

Yes. The liver is an amazing organ. As long as the liver isn’t too damaged it can fully regenerate. I can’t recall if it takes 6 weeks or 6 months though. So hopefully your blood tests improve.

My liver enzymes AGT/ALT I believe were very high before I quit drinking. I had blood work done about a month and a half after quitting and they were significantly better, not perfect but better. It takes some time. My doc also sent me for an ultrasound of liver, kidneys etc. that came back okay. If you’re concerned be honest with your doc and maybe get some extra test done

Yes, the liver regenerates well in most cases. Even in cases where there is permanent scarring you can get excellent function back so long as you remain sober.

You can look up your numbers (ALT) vs. Normal range online. Mine were pretty bad whilst in the midst of my addiction but have since recovered to within normal range. That’s after 9 months on/off abstinence from alcohol (I.e. about 240/270 days I have been alcohol free including the last 43 days straight).
