I’m new here. I’ve been checking out a few sites for some support and community. I just recently decided to completely quit alcohol again. I quit for just over a year in late 2023-2024. Over the last bit I’ve tried reintroducing it here and there. Sometimes it was ok but for the most part it really sent me into major depression and I don’t want to live like that anymore. I’m committing for another year, though I’m only in my first week, I feel really happy about my decision.
@Chancellor welcome! Glad to have you here, this place is pretty great, lots of good folks here. You mentioned you were looking to go another year, does that mean you intend to go back? Just curious, most of us here are working for long term sobriety as in complete sobriety but nothing wrong with setting goals
Welcome. Have a look around on here there are some great resources and even greater members that will be here for you when you choose to really get serious about quitting.
Im not sure Id be of any help to you in quitting for a year. Youve done a year before, why do you need help to do a year again?
The thought of quitting for good used to fill me full of dread. The thought of never having another drink ever again terrified me. Then something clicked I came here everyday for months, I read and listened to audiobooks I worked and worked at not drinking for months and I still do. I cant imagine having an alcoholic drink these days. Alcohol robbed me of a big part of my life.
My life has never been better since quitting.
Best wishes Chancellor
@Leveller life truly has never been better! I had a piece of pie at 11:00 PM last night and didn’t feel one bit of guilt about it because I haven’t had a drink in almost 2 months
Welcome. I’m in agreement with the people questioning why to just commit for a year. I think you have to ask yourself if it’s worth it to drink again. I asked myself that question many times and the answer is always no. It just doesn’t do anything good for you and the consequences can be pretty brutal. Not sure if you ever checked out an AA meeting or read any of the books, but it might be worth it to check out. Either way you have a recognition that alcohol has been hurting you and that’s further than a lot of people even get. Take it a step at a time and maybe dig a little into what alcoholism is. Best wishes
Chancellor: I have to ask why commit to one year? Surely you remember the benefits of having become sober in 24 - 25? Did you not feel healthier? You recognise that having the odd drink merely spirals you into depression, well, ethanol is a depressant, and since you are aware of the detrimental effects drinking has on your emotional state, why on earth would you now only commit for one year? I suggest, as others have done, you do some reading on here and using outside sources about alcoholism: you will find people in here knowledgable and compassionate folk. Ok, well, all the bet, and take care.
Welcome to the community. This is a wonderful site to be a part of. I hope you take time to look around and join in on the threads. The space is filled with love, support and great advice. A wonderful tool to have in your sober journey
