I Don’t Know What To Do Or How To Feel Anymore

I feel like I’ll never be able to control my drinking even though it’s slowly killing me.

Hey. You’ve come to the right place. Many of us have felt that way about our drinking. You know you need to make a change.

What have you tried?

AA has helped me. I tried controlled drinking before that but it didn’t work.

Welcome to the forum, a useful too to get sober and live again.

Drinking will kill you slowly, painfully and make you suffer alone. But there is good news, as @C-sun pointed out, even the most hopeless among us can live again and can be a happier, healthier individual.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. What makes you think it’s a hopeless losing battle? Have you tried to get sober before, and if you did, did you use any outside resource such as AA, SMART recovery, IOP group therapy, inpatient detox?

My name is David and I’m an alcoholic. I’ve been sober a little over 6 months. I was a classic functional drunk for the most part, I kept a job, have not been homeless and have only seen the inside of a jail cell once. I was also a Jekyll and Hyde drinker, once I got the first drink in me, the train was full steam ahead and losing control, when I lost control I did some wreckless and harmful things not just to myself, but to my wife and anyone around me. My kids were taken by DCS and placed in foster care, they are still in the care of others but soon to be reunited with myself and my wife, who is also an alcoholic. I attended an IOP group therapy centered on addiction, a lot of AA meetings and see my own individual therapist as well as a couples therapist. Life is a far cry from what it was in the beginning of this year, it’s full of positive possibilities and love. This was not my first attempt at sobriety. It takes a lot of daily work to get to be the person you imagine yourself to be.

You are not alone. Read. Relate. Post your fears. Search the forum, you’ll find that there are a lot of similarities between us all. Share your sober selfies. We are not a glum lot, there is a whole metric fuckton of life that is fun without the use of mind altering substances.

Welcome. You can control your drinking, if you want to, but wanting to isn’t enough. You will need to learn how to, and that’s why you are here. You are here to learn how to get better at getting better, each and every day. Every one of us was once where you are today. There’s lots of knowledge, wisdom, and most of all, support here. I hope you will read, learn, ask questions, seek and offer support. Just know that you aren’t alone, and that everyone wants you to win!
