I’m on CBD therapy for medical reasons and I’m hoping to eventually transition out of hard core pharma, (psych meds especially) and continue only having CBD therapy as a treatment modality for my diabetes, hypertension and cholesterol. My mental health is already better for it.
Since moving to CBD I’ve seen some very significant changes, for the better, in my mental and overall health.
But here’s the thing though. I can’t seem to shake this feeling that I’m cheating on my sobrierty somehow by being on CBD therapy.
My understanding of CBD is it’s what’s left over when you remove the mind-altering stuff out of THC. Maybe that’s an over simplification, but I don’t think CBD can get you high.
If you are prescribed something, use it as directed, then I wouldn’t classify this as “cheating”. It is when we use to abuse, escape, or alter reality, this is when we are no longer sober.
Kudos for your goal of finding alternatives to psycotropic drugs to manage your mental health. I would advise caution though, and do this only with the blessings of your Healthcare providers. Self-medicating and Self-diagnosis are halmarks of addiction. I long ago concluded that if I decide I need an intoxicant or some other substance, I’ll seek a qualified second opinion.
People are prescribed mental health meds for a reason. You should not feel like a fraud or any less for taking these, if you are taking them as prescribed. Anyone that tells you different can mind their own business.
CBD is not a narcotic and has numerous health benefits.
@Borderline_Billy - thanks for sharing, important topic. Being the devil’s advocate for a bit: do you feel that you are cheating? If so, why? If not, why not?
Your sobriety is yours alone, to do with as you see fit. Having said that, you asking about cheating makes me wonder if you feel that you are somehow crossing a boundary?
@Yoda-Stevie the CBD I use contains THC which is why I’m conflicted. I use CBD as I should. My sobriety from vodka remains intact however. Cigarettes not so good but I’m working on ditching them too.
@Dirk I’m proud of my sobriety from alcohol streak. That remains intact. I originally set out to ditch the booze. I never factored CBD into my sobriety. What is addiction? I think I’m still trying to define addiction for me.
@Borderline_Billy - I understand and am not enough of an expert to know if CBD always contains THC. Having said that, I think it’s a perfectly reasonable question to ask the health professional who prescribed the CBD in the first place?
I feel the same and have had similar thoughts. Overall im more inclined to say im AF than sober because while my drug of choice was etoh and im 5 years sober from that i still have habits and tendencies that draw me from my higher power that could manifest in thc use. Its a hard question and deserves contemplation. Sounds like your 1) sober from alcohol and 2) continuing to identify where you can improve on your sobriety. Ultimately my advise is to never lose ground on 1. and keep working on 2. Over time i think the work will lead to a better, more self actualized and more sober person.
