I’m army veteran. I’ve been drinking heavily for about 5yrs. Discharged 3yrs ago. I’m trying to stop. My problem is random drinking sessions for no reason:pleading_face:. When I was living on the army barracks, drinking was the culture. But now it effects my wife and I don’t want to loose her. Any tips are welcomed
What are you doing on a daily basis to seek outside support for your sobriety?
Welcome to the Community
Your not alone, I’m glad you found us here because this is such a great supportive community.
There are many other veterans on here for the same or similar reasons, I’m not one of them but I’m sure some will be along to say hi soon
I do understand the drinking as I have problems with that too.
Keep reaching out here
Not much. I’ve have been on psyc support for the last 5 years, that is about it. I did have a period of 3mths where I didn’t drink. But that was a couple of years ago. I’m fine when I’m drinking with mate’s. But, the last few years I’ve found myself smashing in a lot of beers, wine or liquor for no good reason and I want to to stop it.
There are a ton of Veterans AA and other recovery groups. Go find some other veterans that understand what you are going through.
Stay strong. Deny the voice inside your head its the old you.
Welcome! Fellow squid vet here. Biggest piece of advice…LIVE ON HERE! Read, then read some more…and participate.
Hey Scott – not a vet but here if you need support.
Welcome- this is an incredibly supportive community. As @Thirdmonkey says— just living on this site (literally just browsing the threads and soaking in advise) has been a life safer. Also as @LeeHawk suggested -look into local or online meetings for aa or veterans aa…
In any case- you need to start collecting tools to help you in your sobriety. We cant fight addiction alone so the more support we have the better. Change up your habits and surroundings that lead you to drink. You dont have to give these up forever just till you ate strong enough to handle sober.
Again- scroll around this site - jump in whenever and wherever you feel comfortable
Welcome. I’m glad you are here, and hope you will stay.
Discipline is a concept which I am sure you are familiar. It takes Discipline to say “no” to the drink that matters…the first drink, but this Discipline pays dividends and interest. When we say “no” to the first drink, there can’t be a second or third or eighth, and we remain sober. Objective secured. However, when we don’t exercise the Discipline, and instead say “just one” we lose. “Just one” is how every bender starts.
Exercise self-discipline and say “no” to one drink, the drink that matters…the first drink.
