Im back! 2 days down

Hi all! 34 year old female here back on my journey trying to get sober for the 16374802 time. Its exhausting but I know it’s what I have to do. If you read back on some of my posts I’ve pretty much explained how and why I’m here. Long story short, started drinking at 15, been in active addiction since my kids were born so I wanna say at least 16 years. These past 7 years or so I’ve been drinking every single day with maybe a day or 2 in a month without.

Well.. I’m on day 2 of no alcohol. The last time I went to the Dr for withdrawals I was prescribed librium so I’ve leaned on that for any anxiety I’ve been having. My next question is this…. I know I’m lacking a bunch of vitamins and things I need to do to get back to feeling like a normal human. What are some vitamins or supplements did you take while getting sober that has helped make a difference in mood and energy and just overall?

Thank you for reading! Glad to be back!

Congrats for coming back. Im also on my 183664828264 attempt though never stop trying.

Im no Dr, though its comonly said that long term Alcohol abuse does rob the body of vitamins and i believe the B group, specifically B12 to be one of the most crucial vitamins many alcoholics are depleted with.

Ontop of a standard Multivitamin, i take a standalone B type multicomplex vitamin for this. Though like anything, too much can be as dangerous as not enough. So best to consult with a Dr and get some blood work to really see what you do and dont need.

Hi Gabby, yeah B vitamins are a biggie but id get your Dr to check your bloods because depending on how low you are you may need a loading dose followed by regular injections and meds for a while least thats what happened to me, supplements might not cut it as they aren’t strong enough in some cases but you need to know via a Dr what your levels are the begin with, it was very low B12 with me which causes lots of issues but I know low thiamine (B1) is another common culprit

Congrats on never giving up. Same here!

Oh yesss I have heard b vitamins are essential. I will look more into it and also I have yet to make an appointment. I want to be at least 7 days sober before going to my Dr for blood work.

Thank you for your response!

Definitely will look into it and I’m waiting til I hit day 7 to schedule that appointment. One day at a time. But I know I need to do this I just pray sobriety sticks this time

Hi! I’ve never heard of cola nut and ginko? Are those vitamins also?

Oh wow. Im intrigued. Where can I find both?

I’ll look. Thank you for that. And good luck on your journey! We got this!

You can make it stick if you want it enough, the power is all in your hands i hope you know that? Definitely one day at a time to begin with, all that matters for today is hitting that pillow tonight sober. When the cravings hit dig deep and find another way to deal with things, if I can do it, you can too

It will take sometime to start feeling better. Vitamin will help some. But stay away from alcohol is the key. Alcohol destroys are bodies. But you have started the down the right path. Get plenty of rest and stay hydrated.

Just what ever you get that head on the pillow tonight sober.

Welcome back Gabriella! As to vitamins useful in an alcohol detox, consult a medical professional please. We’re just a bunch of strangers on the internet. But OK. Vitamin B1 is the most important. Depending on how much you were drinking, and how well or bad you were taking care of yourself with nutrition, sleep, and more factors, it might be best to have injections with B1 to begin with, because your digestive system might not be able to process pills or capsules at the moment. I don’t know and I can’t know as I’m 1000’s miles away and I don’t know you.

Be careful with general vit B supplements. You can overdose on B6 and cause nerve damage. Some pills are very higly dosed. Vit C is always good. But I strongly advise you to seek out medical help and have you blood checked. Your electrolytes and minerals might be off balance and need supplementing or even depleting. Again, I don’t know. I am a nurse working in a detox btw. Be careful with the librium, it’s good against withdrawal symptoms and the risk of going into seizures, but you can easily get addicted to that as well. Again advice from a doctor is very much recommended. Success!

This is a great question but I would discuss which supplements/vitamins would be beneficial. Especially if you’re dealing with liver issues. Mixing them could do more harm than good.

Great job on your sobriety. Hang on tight to it.

Probably go to the doctor and get a blood test so that you actually know what you need to be taking because if you take something and you don’t really need it then what’s the point? I think your best bet in my opinion is to get involved with the sober community local meetings or meetings online on zoom
