I'm doing it for someone else

…at some point, maybe I’ll find out that I’m doing it for myself as well.

I used to drink on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It’s a Friday evening right now and I’m 2,5 hours away from a week sober. It feels AMAZING. I don’t even wanna drink. I decided to do this after a particularly nasty fight with my brother and his wife on Halloween. It wasn’t about my addiction… but it kinda was. It felt horrible, and I couldn’t stand it anymore.

Said brother and I have been at odds with each other for about a year and a half. We lost our dad this year, and he took it the hardest out of all us 8 siblings. Then I ended up in the hospital after I did some stuff. He’s taking my addiction the hardest as well, and he’s been lashing out at me for it.

Anyways… that’s my situation right now. I’m gonna call him and talk stuff out, inform him of my new “journey”, and instead of going down to the bar tonight, I’m going to bed early to hang out with my mom and little brother.

It feels good, man.

I tried to quit for others also in the past, all that really meant is i did not really want to stop. Hate to be negative but it never works until you realize you need to do it for yourself. Wish you well!

There is a unique sobriety story in everyone here. We’ve had different motivations to get sober and to stay sober. What all started with the desire to not drink, that small voice that tells us that we really should quit, or not hurt ourselves so much with drinking, or that we don’t want to do this again. Even when we know we’re going to do it anyway.

We want it, we decide to try it, we start taking actions toward sobriety. And we all know that “I’ll stay sober if…” or “I’ll stay sober until…” or “I’ll keep sober unless….” are all just our old addictive rationalization thinking creeping back in. What those do succeed to keep sober do, all of us and every one of us, is to decide (consciously or not) every day to not drink, and then follow that decision with action to realize it.

Brother or no brother, mom or no mom, a partner or not, a job or not, children or not, we have decided to stay sober and we do that. We stay sober - no matter what.

Blessings  on your house today.
