In Person Meetings

So I went to an in person meeting about 5 years ago in my town. I can remember feeling awkward because there was a particular person there that was pretty rude after I spoke to me for lack of a better term … as in in front of everyone. It was kind of sad cause a co-worker was the main speaker there so I figured it would be a good place to find support. Honestly after that I did go back to drinking only to hit much lower and then sobered up thanks to this online forum and a plan and people in my life 556 days ago. Since that time at the in person meeting I’ve loved this forum for its true anonymity so to speak. It’s kinda like that Norm MacDonald skit where he says “Kinda the exact opposite of anonymous telling a whole church basement full of people that can memorize my face” … but the last few days I was thinking I might want to try it again because I feel a different sort of peace about actually quitting instead of just going last time out of boredom for lack of a better word. I do worry about the shame of it because some of the stigma of being an alcoholic is just plain not pretty and socially damaging (which is probably the reason for the stigma in the first place) and I always hated admitting I was one cause I didn’t want people to fill in the blanks with untruths. Anyways, was just wondering what other people’s experiences were in person compared to on here.

Ive never felt more seen and understood than in the rooms of AA. The key is to not get hung up on differences but to find similarities and community. Not all aa meetings are the same. If one doesnt feel right, try another. That being said, some people are douche bags and very sick and thats why we teach principles before personalities because its the principles of the 12 steps that get and keep people happy joyous and free. Dont let a sour interaction detour you from finding what i and many have found as a supportive community

Curious to hear how it goes!
