Meditation for the Day
Your life has been given to you mainly for the purpose of training your soul. This life we live is not so much for the body as for the soul. We often choose the way of life that best suits the body, not the way that best suits the soul. God wants you to choose what suits the soul as well as the body. Accept this belief and a wonderful molding of character is the result. Reject it and God’s purpose for your life is frustrated, and your spiritual progress is delayed. Your soul is being trained by the good you choose. Thus the purpose of your life is being accomplished.

24 hours a day, September 16, meditation
We seem to live not only in time but also in eternity. …our lives can flow as some calm river through the dry land of earth. It can cause the trees and flowers of the spiritual life - love and service - to spring forth and yield abundantly. Spiritual work may be done for eternity, not just for now. Even here on earth we can live as though our real lives were eternal.

This meditation and prayer from “24 Hours a Day” by Richmond Walker, apart from the use of “God” to describe it, is the cornerstone of my understanding of spirituality today, and since I got sober. My emphasis added.
Meditation for the Day
In improving our personal lives, we have Unseen help. We were not made so that we could see (the Help). That would be too easy for us and there would be no merit in obeying (the Help). It takes an act of faith, a venture of belief, to realize the Unseen Power. Yet we have much evidence of Its existence in the strength that many people have received from the act of faith, the venture of belief. We are in a box of space and time and we can see neither our souls nor It. (The Unseen Power) and the human spirit are both outside the limitations of space and time. Yet our Unseen help is effective here and now. That has been proved in thousands of changed lives.
Prayer for the Day
I pray that I may make the great venture of belief. I pray that my vision may not be blocked by intellectual pride.

How does one live a spiritual life? This mediation for today from “24 hours a day” explains it somewhat.
Meditation for the Day
How do I get strength to be effective and to accept responsibility? By asking the Higher Power for the strength I need each day. It has been proved in countless lives that for every day I live, the necessary power shall be given me. I must face each challenge that comes to me during the day, sure that (higher power) will give me the strength to face it. For every task that is given me, there is also given me all the power necessary for the performance of that task. I do not need to hold back.

Another manifestation of the truth “I see what I look at”.
24 hours a day, Richmond Walker, entry for October 17
Meditation for the Day
Today look upward toward Divinity, not downward toward yourself. Look away from unpleasant surroundings, from lack of beauty, from the imperfections in yourself and those around you. In your unrest, behold divine calmness: in your impatience, eternal patience; in your limitations, ultimate perfection. Looking upward toward the Divine, your spirit will begin to grow. Then others will see something in you that they also want. As you grow in the spiritual life, you will be enabled to do many things that seemed too hard for you before.
Prayer for the Day
I pray that I may keep my eyes trained above the horizon of myself; I pray that I may see infinite possibilities for spiritual growth.

Meditation on failure and humility, the proper attitude toward these things.
24 hours a day, Richmond Walker
October 18
Meditation for the Day
Not until you have failed can you learn true humility. Humility arises from a deep sense of gratitude … for … the strength to rise above past failures. Humility is not inconsistent with self-respect. The true person has self-respect and the respect of others and yet is humble. The humble person is tolerant of others’ failings, and does not have a critical attitude toward the foibles of others. Humble people are hard on themselves and easy on others.
Prayer for the Day
I pray that I may be truly humble and yet have self-respect. I pray that I may see the good in myself as well as the bad.

Meditation for the Day
You were meant to be at home and comfortable in the world. Yet some people live a life of quiet desperation. This is the opposite of being at home and at peace in the world. Let your peace of mind be evident to those around you. Let others see that you are comfortable, and seeing it, know that it springs from your trust in a Higher Power. The dull, hard way of resignation is not (the way of faith). Faith takes the sting out of the winds of adversity and brings peace even in the midst of struggle.
Prayer for the Day
I pray that I may be more comfortable in my way of living. I pray that I may feel more at home and at peace within myself.

Meditation for the Day
Give something to those who are having trouble, to those whose thoughts are confused, something of your sympathy, your prayers, your time, your love, your thought, your self. Then give of your own confidence, as you have had it given to you by the grace of God. Give of yourself and of your loving sympathy. Give your best to those who need it and will accept it. Give according to need, never according to deserts. Remember that the giving of advice can never take the place of giving of your self.
My emphasis added, as a reminder about what to bring to this forum.

…somehow I feel because I have tried hard, played square, and met situations, that something good will come from this whole experience. It may not come the way I want it to, but I sincerely believe that it will come the way it is best.

One of my favorite passages from 24 hours a day by Richmond Walker
Jan 25 (I skipped ahead one day, I couldn’t wait!)
Meditation for the Day
I believe that complete surrender of my life to God is the foundation of serenity. God has prepared for us many mansions. I do not look upon that promise as referring only to the after-life. I do not look upon this life as something to be struggled through, in order to get the rewards of the next life. I believe that the Kingdom of God is within us and we can enjoy “eternal life” here and now.
Prayer for the Day
I pray that I may try to do God’s will. I pray that such understanding, insight, and vision shall be mine as shall make my life eternal, here and now.

Meditation for the Day
The joy of true fellowship shall be mine in full measure. I will revel in the joy of real fellowship. There will come back a wonderful joy, if I share in fellowship now. Fellowship among spiritually minded people is the embodiment of (The Divine) purpose for this world. To realize this will bring me a new life joy. If I share in humanity’s joy and travail, a great blessing will be mine. I can truly live a life not of earth, but a heaven life here and now.
Prayer for the Day
I pray that I may be helped and healed by true spiritual fellowship. I pray that I may sense (The Divine) presence in spiritual fellowship with (humanity).

Meditation for the Day
Gently breathe in the Divine spirit, that spirit which, if not barred out by selfishness, will enable you to do good works. This means rather that the Divine will be enabled to do good works through you. You can become a channel for the Divine spirit to flow through you and into the lives of others. The works that you can do will only be limited by your spiritual development. Let your spirit be in harmony with the Divine spirit and there is no limit to what you can do in the realm of human relationships.

I did a meditation with my instructor after a body balance class yesterday and she talked of letting go of the ego that stops us. Being humble yet resilient to that voice that naysays our progress. Difficulty and struggles are sometimes self built. Sometimes we need to just accept, and do. Not listen to our inner ego/toddler. It stilled my inner critic.

Meditation for the Day
We cannot fully understand the universe. The simple fact is that we cannot even define space or time. They are both boundless, in spite of all we can do to limit them. We live in a box of space and time, which we have manufactured by our own minds and on that depends all our so-called knowledge of the universe. The simple fact is that we can never know all things, nor are we made to know them. Much of our lives must be taken on faith.
