Intensive Outpatient - What to Expect?

Hi everyone,

My doctor has told me to get into intensive outpatient (specifically for my PTSD, since I’m finally facing my trauma for the first time while sober).

I’ve never done anything like that before so I have no idea what it entails or what to expect. Any advice/info/words of wisdom would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I’m posting to bump this thread back up to the top - I haven’t done IOP myself but I know there are many here who have (if you search “IOP” you’ll find many results).

It sounds like a constructive step for you and that’s good! :slightly_smiling_face:

I have been to IOP twice . Once in 2019 and most recently last year after a bad relapse. Having the support of a group that really relates to me was very helpful. You get intensive treatment like you would in an inpatient but still able to live at home and maintain life. IOP I believe can be individual or group therapy. I did group because I need the peer support. Most time is spent on coping mechanisms , understanding addiction and mental health , gaining insights from others and of course accountability . I’m sure days/times vary by location but both times I went 3 days a week for 3 hours each session. It was scary at first , however, it turned out to be the best thing I did for myself.

Thank you! I’ve never done inpatient treatment or group therapy before, although I’ve been in solo therapy for a long time. It will be interesting to see what the differences are.
