So ive just got this 12 step addiction workbook, when ive looked inside it says AA and other 12 step programmes combined into a 12 step work book…then im reading on here that you shouldnt do 12 steps without a sponsor…i dont go to AA because i live in a tiny community and bound to bump into people i know, im not ashamed but id rather keep my alcoholism private but still want to do the steps…what u guys think?
Can you? Yes…will you get something from it? Ofcourse!
I did them once by myself, then once with a sponsor. Both times helped me on my journey.
From my own experience, a sponsor helped me a lot!
Oh dear then…
You might be able to get a sponsor online ? if so prob need the big book of AA ,as the original 12 step program was written by Bill Wilson in 1938 since then lots of recovery groups have used it . As for others that why its called Anonymous If you meet people there they will be there for the same reason you are ? give them a try helped keep me sober wish you well
Thanks Scott, Rob and Ray xx
Fyi, as far as bumping into people. I work with the public, never once was “outed”. One meeting has a person, that peobably 50% of the people in this state would recognize…and he has never been outed either.
Its not the outed thing its the thought of people talking about me, judging and not saying anything to me…people talk its human nature…i dont like the idea of not knowing who knows or not, people who dont understand judge. I really care about my recovery though and im trying to strengthen it.
This book looks good! I have done the steps with and without a sponsor. In fact i am thinking of doing the steps again (this time without a sponsor bcuz i dont go to in person mtgs). I do feel tho that theres a HUGE benefit to doing them with a sponsor. When i have, my sponsor was able to guide me and show me things about myself that i may not have seen otherwise. Especially during step 4. But i think either way, with or without a sponsor, you will gain some benefits for ur recovery by doing the steps proud of u!
Thanks so much Dana, im just going to do the book and go from there i think…
I get it. Start where you are comfortable and leave all options open for the future
