Hi Marie,
Has anything triggered this, or do you have an idea why you are feeling like this right now?

I keep thinking about my past and I know not good but I don’t know how to stop it I live on my own I do have a great family but I bottle things up and don’t talk I don’t mind doing it with the group and it has been working so why do I want to drink :pensive:

Hi Marie,
I’m sorry you feel this way and it seems that your past is causing you frustrations. I posted on another thread today a quote from the psychologist and philosopher Carl Jung that “we are not what happened to us, we are what we choose to become”. It is difficult to let go of our past mistakes, and I have had plenty, but we must accept them and move on. Easier said than done but there is nothing we can do about them, though we can shape our future and it is great that you have a determination to change old habits to do that. I think the serenity prayer is always a good reminder to concentrate on what we can change

I notice you post on the gratitude thread and being mindful of things we can be grateful for is wonderful, it is surprising how much we do have when we feel we have lost everything. I find meditation helpful to maintain a focus. I do think this forum is useful for sharing experiences and feelings, so stick around too. Remember that there will be times when you feel remorse and regret, especially when we are recovering from a “relapse”, but picking up a drink or using is not going to change anything that happened in the past. Sobriety though will help you through your journey to a better life though.

Thanks Piglet I am spending the day with my family today my twin grandchildren who are my world and so innocent they are only 8yrs old I hope I get it this time you are right I need to let go the biggest guilt I have is when my wee brother was murdered I wasn’t there for him I think that’s because I was the oldest and he was the youngest

And accept that we, as humans, are helpless sometimes. I am so sorry to hear to hear about your brother. You are not the one who deserves to be punished for this. The blame is a million miles from you, it is 100% with the murderer. It’s odd but guilt is part of the grieving process. I feel it but not as acutely as in your situations but nevertheless I do understand it “could I have prevented my best friend/cousin’s suicide if only…etc?” Perhaps, but then I think, only if I had supernatural abilities of premonition and there is no need to burden ourselves with the guilt. We can only do what we can only do.

So very true. We live thru the challenges in life. Adding layer upon layer to who we are.
