I’m not a huge Korn fan. Never was, I mean I liked their debut and follow the leader, but was always a mere meh, about them.
Another fun fact about Korn, they play Ibanez 7 string guitars, the extra top string is tuned to a low B like a 5 string bass. This concept was developed for Steve Vai, and it didn’t take off. Bands like Korn found all these guitars in pawn shops all over the nation and took off with them and created an entirely new sound,
Jen I know your not too far off of me when it comes to age. Maybe 2 years? But I was more into Hanson and *NSYNC ok totally lying, but I was still rocking the grunge of the 90s, nirvana, sound garden Alice In Chains, stuff like that
Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
I appreciate the guitar fact. Didn’t know that!
My best friend loved Hansen and *NSYNC. I had my Korn wall and she had her **NSYNC wall
I do listen to a wide variety though. Tonight I’m playing stuff from the 50s
Been listening to a lot of Motörhead recently when I want something that for me is considered heavy. Pretty much starting from the beginning… Any other bands that are similar or related please let me know or suggestions
Well the bottom string is tuned to a b so it changes your chords a bit, you get that beefier sound, often it’s easier tuned down a whole step to get that real dropped sound
That all makes sense. I remember reading an article about Jimi Hendrix talking about it being easier to play half step down. I’ve always played standard. But like we talked about yesterday it’s pretty much time to try new stuff and make changes. Learning covers and other tunings
I messed around with drop d For like a week and messed with some rage And nirvana songs. But I really haven’t tried any other tunings
I’m not a big alternate tuning guy, drop D is very common cause it gives you the one finger chords,
I played in a few bands where it was one step down, so DGCFAD, which was cool for metal stuff,
As far as the half step flat like Hendrix and almost all 80s bands, it’s got its purpose, it takes that brightness away, makes the Melodies easier to sing and bending strings is easier,
For me i am usually studying a lot and it’s mostly standard tuning, so I use .009 gauge strings which offsets the string tension a bit for bends and vibrato, if I’m going to tune down I go with .010s cause the less tension is evened out with thicker strings. Then you have guys like Billy Gibbins from ZZ Top who uses .008 strings which are way weird for me,
Alternate tunings can be fun to learn new ideas, almost all of the Goo Goo dolls stuff is in some sort of strange tuning, like Iris is B,D,D,D,D,D Pearl Jam daughter is open G, the lead guitar is major pentatonic of G in standard, she talks to Angels is Open E, there’s others I can’t think of off the top of my head
DADGAD! I almost forgot that one Dolly Parton made it famous, cause she always had nails and it was easier for her to play in DADGAD cause she could bare a whole fret and not have to worry about her nails interfering
Thank you for all of this knowledge I just screenshot this and can use it as a reference. Sometimes I feel like I made the mistake of being self-taught and just trial and error for 15 years. But now it’s time to learn the technical side and the mumbo-jumbo lol… Some things you’re talking about makes sense but I mostly just go off of my ear, Music is probably my first memory so it comes naturally to create
And I’m really stubborn with trying different strings or really changing anything. I’ve been pretty much using a telecaster with a Marshall amp, boss loop pedal , Ernie ball light strings, and Dunlop .60 picks … Have to be those pics, and standard tuning That’s all been the same for probably seven years or more …most of my equipment is back in Saint Augustine but I think I’m going to get a cheap little guitar just a mess around with other tunings
I am for the most part self taught, I had some guitar teachers but they stuck to certain things exploring on my own taught me a lot, and of course trial and error, as far as playing bass and drums, I can hold it together pretty well, but I never took a formal lesson just learned from friends, watching others and things like that.
Like I tell people don’t jump from the stage it only looks cool In music videos in reality people can’t catch you and jt sucks hitting the floor.
Lessons and teachers can help just get you into a regimen, practice and playing is what gets you over the top, also YouTube has a tremendous catalog of great teachers to help you, also ultimate guitar tab site has a lessons section I think it costs like 30 bucks a year but plenty of knowledge to help you learn more mumbo jumbo
You said you were living in Florida right? What part? I might be able to introduce you to some people
Yeah honestly Street performing has taught me so much and consistently going out five days a week for 3 months … I’ve been doing it for years but it really increases your endurance, and honestly now it’s probably time to record and I have all of his new material from doing that. I honestly just wanna see where this takes me because I’m able to make my own schedule and it’s pretty cool. Now I’m kind of chilling out and taking a break and just mostly playing at home which is nice for a change. I am from Saint Augustine Florida but I’m currently in Tucson Arizona . I love Saint Augustine and it’s probably the coolest city I’ve ever seen so far. I’ll be going back eventually I’m just not sure when … Probably don’t have to explain that story lol…
I’m definitely gonna check out some different references and lessons online. I’m probably gonna head back out to start playing in a different part of town in Tucson in probably a couple weeks. But honestly in about two months I will have played it pretty much every shopping center in Tucson. So then I just have to think about where to go next. There might be a lot more competition in Los Angeles as far as Street Performing but when you’re doing this you kind of have to move around to different cities to keep progressing
Yeah I feel you, I’m from Northeastern Pa I remember being in shows where breaking Benjamin was the headliner and it was a 5 dolllar venue, I took a break from music after my kids where born cause I felt I needed to focus more on a steady paycheck and being more of a parent than I had, I got back into the scene around 2013 and had a chance to do vans warped tour which didn’t end up happening for a reason, I’m not ready to discuss on a public forum, I was doing shows at bars and open mics or being a guest performer for others for free drinks and party time for a few years, when I moved to York I was sold on finishing my solo project which was mostly guitar instrumental stuff influenced by joe satriani, I don’t have my masters currently, which has me livid but it was a lesson learned.
I’ve been in the DC area for almost 2 years now, Music scene is hit or miss, and I’m exploring it, I’d rather get back to being a touring musician, and in my off time live somewhere warm, Texas Arizona SoCal, Yano be a fair weather bitch, a lot of my coworkers from our Florida office would like me to transfer there and that has been something I considered if it will help my music career I’m all in.
That’s a lot of experience and knowledge to work with. That’s really awesome. I forgot that you Lived in York… I lived there from 6 to 16… All I really remember is the soft pretzels at Rutters, snowboarding a lot, and route 30 by my school had this really old car shop that had Bunch of Old classic cars… I can’t speak on whether Jacksonville or Saint Augustine is better than the places you’ve been at. But I think you could be successful anywhere if you put the work in … That’s what’s so cool about being sober that you can actually pursue your goals. It’s reality
Oh yeah and back in the day when you had snow days. you think you’re going to school and then you wake up… Sometimes you knew right away you didn’t have to go to school but sometimes you have to sit in front of that damn TV and let it go through all the counties in Pennsylvania or whatever somehow York is always the freaking last one
I think it depends from what I’m gathering based on your location you went to Central York Schools?
I used to live right up the road from there on Druck Valley, and Rocky Ridge County Park was literally in my back yard. The Rutters on Mt Zion by the galleria mall was my jam. I’d go there all the time
The closest landmark to me was that area that they claimed was the Seven Gates of Hell, where Druck Valley turned to Kruetz Creek Rd,
But yeah waking up and turning on the TV to see if there was a snow day was the highlight of our childhood, kids today won’t remember the pain of waiting an hour to see if you had school or not cause you missed your section.
I definitely recognize a lot of those streets and names. Yeah I went to Central York high school. I lived in a neighborhood called Raintree I can’t really remember where that was by though. I do remember the mall … What is the Fishbone skate shop there ? And they had this toy store that was ridiculous I can’t remember what it’s called. Really is a small world.
