I know it’s an annoyance but it’s important for them to properly examine the retina, optic nerve etc. I have to have it done too annually, and so does my preschooler, since he was age one. He especially hates it but it’s for his health

Good question. I’m not an expert on ocean currents, but trade/sailing routes follow the currents. There are “dead spots” in the ocean where boats are less likely to sail because the current would not favor them. I’m not sure where this location falls. However, the ISS is 254 miles away from earth’s surface, so I bet they’d have a pretty good chance of being the closest.
