Missed the community here

Hi all, I have been thinking about the great people on this forum and the supportive community.

I really appreciate the help you have all given me in rough times and happier times too.

I have not posted in a while, I was sober for a month going to meetings, still am when I need to but was really struggling with the all or nothing aspect of sobriety. I absolutely applaud anyone who has managed sobriety and found a better life for themselves or learned to manage their issues in a healthier manner.

I am trying naltrexone and the Sinclair Method along with CBT. I have alot of reasons why I was drinking I think both of these approaches should help (anxiety, trauma, high likelyhood I also have ADHD) and if not I know the CBT definitely will. (I’m doing this completely separate from Sinclair Method).

I know this is a sobriety forum and I don’t want to upset anyone by sharing, I am still trying my best and just wanted to thank you all. I will continue reading but don’t want to post about this method if it’s not helpful.

Wishing everyone the best and hope you are all doing well

Im not familiar with the Sinclair Method but it is good to see you posting  I have done DBT in the past (not CBT but I believe its sort of similar in a way) and found it very helpful to adjust my thinking. Im sure CBT will be super helpful for you!

Thank you  I have never heard of DBT before, but will absolutely look into that as well.

The benefits of sobriety do not happen overnight. It takes months and usually years of work. Glad to see you taking some steps towards sobriety, unfortunately the Sinclair method is not one of those steps. CBT is generally very helpful

I appreciate you taking the time to comment. I realize sobriety does not happen overnight, unfortunately I have been struggling a long time with my mental health even longer than alcohol and I’m trying my best to finally start dealing with it which is scary but needed.

Can I ask why your thoughts are this about Sinclair Method? If it even helps me binge less at this time I am considering it better than what was happening before. (Just starting so that’s why I’m asking).

Thanks

So any, and I do mean any, method that requires a taper down, or moderation, component needs to be closely supervised by an addiction medicine professional. Otherwise you’re just giving yourself an excuse to keep drinking. I’ve seen a few people on this forum try it, 0 were successful. Alcoholics and addicts are completely incapable of moderation or limiting intake. If we could do that we wouldn’t be here in the first place.

Many many people who have mental health concerns get, and stay, sober. There’s nothing stopping you from doing the same. I get it. Getting sober and working on your shit is scary. But dying alone and drunk is even scarier. The scariest option is to live a long life of never getting sober

My shrink actually mentioned the Sinclair method and she wasn’t particularly keen on it, neither was I. What’s the point of drinking without the buzz? You might as well stick to tea and save your liver the trouble.

Becoming sober is your only chance to better your emotional, psychiological problems. I went through this I drank to medicate all my psycho shit. As probably 99% of ppl on here, in some form or other. I’m 1000% better now. Thanks to long term therapy and sobriety. Don’t give up on yourself.
