Motivation is garbage

So I am celebrating my first “double digits” day (10 days alcohol free today) , by posting this very interesting point of view by famous “motivator” Mel Robbins.
I know her focus is more business orientated but she makes a great point , by literally saying that motivation is garbage , simply because we as human beings will never be fully motivated to start working on something difficult. In our case , we are constantly looking for motivation to keep us going on our sobriety journey.
I think it’s incredibly interesting because all of us who are focused on staying sober and have succeeded (so far) have done it by making the decision , we have taken control of our situation and just done it. Not just by reading motivational quotes , WE have created our own success.

I am very proud of all of you and myself for DOING IT. Instead of waiting for “the right moment” to face our difficulties in life.

Let’s continue doing MORE.

Love you guys :kissing_heart:

Motivation wears off. In my opinion, you have to build new habits to erase the old ones, until the new ones become your normal…

Exactly.
I mean , it’s like New Years. On December 31st we are all hopeful and “motivated” to start making important changes in our lives , go to the gym , loose 20 pounds , quit drinking or smoking and all those promises we make that never come true. 3 days in and we completely forget about it. As you said , motivation wears off. But if we find the strength within ourselves to just make that one decision , not break that one promise that we know will change our lives forever and work on the actual difficult shit… now THAT is motivating. It’s on us to push ourselves so hard that we finally succeed

Yeah… New years resolutions are pointless but i guess people like to think of a bright future ahead during that time  i guess something just has to click in us also in order to maintain the change… Like I lost 30 pounds because one day I just decided to. And now I am 100+ days sober even though I have relapsed before. This time I am really trying to make the change in my thinking and habits. I guess people like the pretty resolutions but arent willing to put in the work. Because relying only on motivation wont get you very far.

Absolutely!
Motivation will never just arrive and stick with us. I think it’s great to have “mantras” or receive the daily motivational quote from the app. But that’s not what will make us get up and get things done. WE have to make it happen , even if it’s a bad day or we are tired or don’t feel like it.
Like I spent years wanting to quit drinking , but hey … it’s my best friends birthday this Saturday , so I’ll start on Sunday. Or my sisters wedding is next month , so I’ll start after that … fooling myself with excuses over and over , “after this happens , I’ll be ready” … garbage , cause I never did. Until now , I have no idea if I was ready , pretty sure not , but it can’t wait no more :grinning:.

Thanks @Oliverjava ! , am so happy you are also making those decisions , putting in the work, getting that creative beast out of you and simultaneously achieving sobriety day after day. it all comes from the same place : work.

Thanks @Otka for posting. Yeah this makes sense to me. I’m also kind of a science/evolution buff and read a lot about “evolutionary psychology” and how our brains are wired for gene survival (not individual survival as the video implies) and all the behaviors that go along with that. This reminds me of the “fake it to make it” approach. That action has to come before the motivation to act!
