Hi everyone, I recently joined this app like 4 days ago. I’m a week clean and I have been experiencing panic attack, I’ve never had them before. I’ve tried so many different coping skills and none seem to work. If anyone has any tips for me, can you please share them? Thank you so much!
Have you considered maybe trying a meeting ,meet like minded people wish you well
Welcome Julia. I totally sympathize. I’m about 6 weeks in and I am constantly on edge and have this tingling feeling in my gut that I interpret as an urge to drink. Good luck to us both.
My anxiety when I first was clean was really high as well, and it took time for the anxiety eventually to taper off. I ended having to get on psych meds, after years of struggling with untreated SMI.
If you feel like you should, talk to a professional, or just wait it out. You gave up a big part of your life recently, of course you’re going to be off a little bit for awhile. Treat yourself like you would a young child and talk yourself through it. There is really nothing to be anxious about, try to understand that deeply.
good luck, hope to see more of you 'round these parts
I learned to let others advice and tips and help actually help me. Let people in who want to help and listen to them
Try to let others help you out by them simply just talking it out with you
Inhale for 4 counts
Hold for 7 counts
Exhale for 8 counts
Repeat
This is a systematic way to slow your heart rate and tell your body you are safe. It helps me with my panic attacks a lot.
If they keep happening, you also might talk to a doctor. Hope that helps and wishing you all tge best on your sobriety journey
Hi Julia and welcome. I was convinced i was having panic attacks as well. It turns out I was just detoxing. It was explained to me that although I was out of the woods physically from serious harm, by going though a medical detox, once those drugs left my system, I was still a physical mess that needed a good month to sort out. I strongly agree to seek medical help if they should continue, but in my situation, it was a painfully slow detox and recovery. I hope everyday gets better for you. STAY STRONG
Best wishes! Anxiety sucks. But it will pass. If you think about it, it makes sense. When we were drinking, we were sedating our entire system. The body fights that by stimulating everything, as soon as the alcohol leaves the system, your body hasn’t gotten the mail yet. Which would explain the huge anxiety we all go through when we quit alcohol. But I promise you, it does get better! Keep up the good work.
