I am not sure how people feel about using medication to assist with recovery, but I’ve been sober for 15 days when I started Naltrexone. I was taking Wellbutrin for depression/Anxiety but added naltrexone and it really killed my cravings. I find it easier to say no to myself when I wanna fall back into my old routine. I feel like it really helped me get this far and just wanted to share.
So Im still an addict I went to my doctor today after what has basically been a 2 week binge, he just said ‘ween yourself off it over a few months’ what they don’t seem to understand is that addicts have no self Co trial to do this… Anyhow I paid a small fortune to get some naltraxene shipped in from aboard so I will get back to you on that, wish me luck
It really helped me. I hope it works for you too!!
Yes definitely. It’s been a real game changer for me. And thank you
I think it is great to have something to help you. I am curious to try everything that might help me to accomplish my goal. I have bad gambling problem/addiction and I am using naltrexone as well. I have stopped gambling like 12 times now. Naltrexone does not stop my gambling but it does help me to slow down. I might play at one time but then I can be like a week without gambling. This is very hard for me and if there was a pill like antabus for gambling, I would take it every darn day.
I’m taking naltrexone and wellbrutrin too and it works wonders. Today I’m 119 days sober and i feel so much better with taking the medication!
I’m on Wellbutrin and it’s been pretty good. However if I drink at all, it doesn’t help me control at all. Also it greatly increases seizure risk in drinkers. It wasn’t the silver bullet but one tool among several.
I’m glad to hear it’s helping! I also got prescribed Naltrexone by my psychiatrist, and it changed my thinking from craving and needing to go out and get some to having thoughts that are just more habitual because it was my normal go to, and those I can have the thought, distract myself, and move on.
“It takes what it takes”
Hi @Phill44, I started on naltrexone a couple years ago when first attempting to go sober. I was not on any other meds, and it just wasn’t effective for my cravings. My doctor later put me on Antabuse and Campral last year, and I recently stopped the Campral (due to headaches) and have been taking the Antabuse only. When I stopped taking the Antabuse in October, I fell back into drinking and had a 3 month bender. I am now 58 days clean and will keep taking this med until I feel confident enough that I can turn my back on this substance for good. Do I think meds help those of us who really need help? Absolutely! Glad you found something that works for you!
I am on the vivitrol shot and am BEYOND grateful for it! I look at it more as a “fail safe/doing whatever it takes to stay sober” rather than a crutch or weakness or something. I think its amazing that we have such tools at our fingertips. Why would we not take advantage of them when we need them?
Side note: for people like me taking a medication as prescribed and intended for an actual need or ailment is a totally new concept and way of life. I’m still trying the learn how “normal” people do medicine. Lol
I’ve been on naltrexone for ever 2 1/2 years and it’s honestly kept me from times of using when I first started and I was still around the group of people I use to use with. I don’t feel like I need it anymore but what’s the harm in taking it anyways? I don’t get sick if I stop and it serves as a memerory of how bad I was when I was using and how great things are for me right now
Wellbutrin opens your window for seizures period . I never had a seizure in my life until I took it for depression. Please be careful especially when detoxing off anything and taking wellbutrin. Doctors wont tell this because they are paid to prescribe it to you.good luck and got bless
I too am on vivitrol and very grateful for it. Works wonders for my opiate cravings.
Thank you! it does sort of give me the extra push I need. I’ve always been a bit impulsive, and this combo seems to keep me much less that way lol
I have taken both in the past, tho not together. I feel like Wellbutrin really contributed to giving me the extra oomph I needed to quit smoking years ago. I took it for a bit less than 90 days and I had a lot of side effects, but it helped. I imagine it would also be useful for a period of time for sobriety.
I tried Naltrexone and it didn’t agree with me…put me in a really foul mood, it did helo somewhat with stopping at one drink. Not always, but enough to see it might work long term for someone else.
Whatever works for you is what works. Do keep an eye out for side effects. Congrats on making the shift to sobriety!
I realize this thread is a bit dated, but I just started on Naltrexone, and had to chime in.
I’m also taking it with Wellbutrin, and I’m blown away by the results! I’m feeling absolutely nothing in the way of cravings.
That’s all for now, thanks for reading!
That is a great combination. I am glad it is working for you…speaking as a healthcare professional and an alcoholic.
Just speaking for myself,I believe welbutrin helped alot. Was on it for first year…going on 2 years sober now.
