Welcome @Ndogg! ![]()
So glad you found us. This community has been one of my biggest tools over the years. Hope you stick around.
Waking up sober and clear headed never gets old.
Waking up sober never gets old!! What a relief it is.
Welcome NDog
I’m still grateful to be waking up hangover free. The crushing headaches I use to get from drinking never stopped me from drinking the next day. What an insidious disease. Hangover free mornings still make my gratitude lists.
Glad you’re here.

Welcome!! Glad u found us! And glad ur experiencing some benefits of recovery already! Way to go!
nice man.
what a relief it is to wake up not trying to figure out how i am going to find money for dope
recovery sure teaches us to have gratitude for the small stuff
- roof over my head
- vehicle
- food
- gas/water/electricity
- no more locked doorslol
much more than i could list lol
So true, we need to pull ourselfs out of the rabbit hole
I could write a book called 1000 reasons. Life is better sober, but there would be one whole chapter relating to sleep everything about it, going to bed, dreaming, waking up, coffee when I think about it I just get pissed off that I didn’t quit a long time ago. Thanks for reminding me.!
it was more of other people and a power greater than myself that did it for me
…i tried several times on my own to quit but could not stay stopped
found the 12 steps, praise God for this program
you should try it out if you haven’t already
For sure
. Never gets old. I was thinking just the other day, apart from a little nausea when I had a migraine, I haven’t actually thrown up in 5 years. It was a monthly or 2 weekly thing for far too long, and I just accepted it. Completely bonkers.
I find myself looking forward ti the morning ahead, no alarm clock, I am awake and up feeling happy every morning
It’s definitely much better. The clarity and energy are big changes. Just hit 20 days today - I drank enough to the point where it’d take A LOT to get hungover so if I was hungover I knew I’d put a lot back the day & night before. Most nights were 3-5 beers after coming home (7%+ ABV) but nights I’d hit 8-9 (or more) were rough the next morning. I haven’t felt like that in three weeks now and it’s been so much better. The social change and lifestyle change has been an adjustment and having to explain why I’m doing this to each friend who wants to get together for a couple is getting a little tiresome, but it’s fine - living clearly and cleanly for 3 weeks for the time in I don’t remember how long (maybe 25 years - Jesus Christ!) has been nice.
At one point in my drinking, following another DUI arrest, I was required to go to the sheriff’s office and provide a breath sample, but only 3 days a week. They were not open on the weekends, so Monday was one of the days. That weekend, I drank heavily on Saturday and started feeling human about mid-day on Sunday. Sunday I drank relatively little - only 6 and I stopped before 9 PM to give my body time to process out the booze. Monday I woke up a little late and felt that thin wedge of headache and sharp sour stomach that I almost always had. I did feel a little hungover, but no more than normal. I scooted out the door and got myself the 10 miles up the road to the sheriff. I gave my sample and turned to leave. I heard “Okay, thanks…..Hey wait a minute, it’s going up”. I blew a .05% BAC, under the legal limit to drive (.08 here), but still a non-zero amount. That led to a day in custody, higher bond to pay and stricter monitoring.
The point there is that I learned that “normal” feeling for me, on my hangover mornings (that is to say, every day), was to have some measurable amount of alcohol on board. When I was working, I would start drinking after work, about 4 pm, pass out, come to about 5 AM with that .05% feeling, head to work and finally start feeling clear of booze with my first food I could keep down at about 1 pm. So I had alcohol on board maybe 20 hours a day. On weekends, I would drink from 6 AM to 8 PM. Even though in my denial I considered myself a “binge drinker” or “high functioning alcoholic”, the truth was I had alcohol in my system almost constantly, particularly those last 5-10 years of my drinking.
I’m sober for a couple decades now. I still need to be reminded of the kind of drunk I was and can become again. If I maintain that awareness, and the gratitude that I do not have to live like that today, I should be okay. @Ndogg, thank you for that awareness today. Blessings
on your house.
I know this thread is old… but I wanted to add. I sometimes dream that I’m drinking and when I wake up.. I’m so happy it was just a nightmare. It is so good to know I didn’t pick back up! Kudos
