Not looking better or losing weight

HI 60 days sober from drinking. I have drank pretty much for 30 years off and on but 30 or so years. I’m not looking great yet ( bags under my eyes ect )and I’m so tired all the time. mind you I’m up at 5 for work work full time and home stuff , dog hubby blah blah. normal life stuff but I’m so tired. i think i look worse then when i was drinking and i am not losing weight. i walk more work out more changed my diet. i thought i would see changes by now at 60 days and I’m getting discouraged a bit.

but isn’t the most important thing that you aren’t drinking?

It’ll happen.

I think we are used to quick results.

“Drink x amount feel different quickly.”

I hate to say it, but, its enjoy the time, because youll be where you want to be with consistency and patients.

Intake more water, stay away from sugar.

Also the more stress, the more cortisol. Its a tough balancing beam.

Ii drink lots of water and im a pescatarian so my diet is pretty good, i always have tons of fresh fruits and veggies.. i cut out all white rice and bread now and white pasta . no chips just healthy snacks, we do like our suger after dinner so we snack on cherries and a few dark chocolate almonds or cranberries for our sweet tooth.

Your life is busy, your body and brain still rewiring in early recovery, obviously you would need more sleep and rest than you actually get. Be patient.

The thing with change is, it’s a slow process. Each day there are micro changes, and when you see yourself in the mirror everyday, those changes are hardly noticeable, but they stack up over time. If you had a before and after picture, you would see the difference.

And then there’s expectation versus reality. I think a lot of times, we expect certain things to happen qhen we quit drinking, like losing weight, but it might not happen, or you might gain weight (like me). As they say, Where there are no expectations, there is no disappointment.

Keep focused on sobriety, the rest will fall in to place.

For me, and a lot of others, I drank my dinner, I rarely ate actual food for dinner. When I quit, I started eating full meals. The calories in these full meals exceeded the calories of the booze I was drinking, so I started gaining weight. Also, alcohol is basically a sugar, and sugar is addictive, so after quitting, I craved sweets, so that contributed to my weight gain as well.

If weight loss is one of your goals, I would strongly recommend getting a scale and start tracking everything you eat in an app (I use Cronometer). This will give you an idea of your current calorie intake. From there, start a calorie deficit, not much, maybe 200 to 300 to start. See how that works for a few weeks, then maybe go down to a 500 deficit, and so on. I’ve been doing this for a while and dropped about 40lbs in the past year (almost 7yrs sober).

I was hoping that just cutting the booze would also cut the weight, but it just didn’t happen, maybe if I was 30 years younger it would have worked?

Go to your doctor, ask for a blood test. It could be a simple vitamin deficiency of some sorts. After all, drinking depletes the body of vitamins and minerals… and it can take many months to recover from that.

I’m not naming any vitamin supplements. I am not a fan of self medication and experimentation.

Something to consider, eventually.

Possibly.

Run a 3 day fast.

When i was powerlifting i got up to 230, i hated it. I just fasted for 4 days.

Water, coconut water and ginger tea for the stomach.

Glow comes back, bloat goes away.

Its an idea, down the line.

Deep breathing during this time will help push blood flow.

It takes a while. For a while I just stared at myself in the mirror thinking I looked really, really tired. I think the change happens first on the inside. Friends commented that my eyes looked brighter but I couldn’t see it.
Just today I made a hair appointment and had the core-shaking realization that I like myself and I like the way I look. I won’t be straightening, taming or dying my lovely aging hair, just a trim thanks. I like who I am. This is new and a very happy occurrence.
46 years old, 6 months completely sober.
Keep at it. You will get there.

Complain to your doctor of persistent tiredness despite having stopped drinking. Ask him where that glow is.
Let him run additional test to make sure it’s not something simple or even complex.

Suggestions. Thyroid Panel, B12, D, Iron Panel. If he doesn’t want to do any of those ask him to explain to you why not.
You’re complaining of fatigue.
Could be perfectly normal. Could be something that you can take care of.

if you’re exercising more and walking more, you could consider slacking on that some and see if you feel less tired.

With your very full schedule, you might just need a little more rest.

You are doing lots of awesome things for your good health.
Congratulations on that!

I hope that things will turn around for you soon and you will feel and look fabulous!

You are doing everything right! Again, congratulations on your sobriety!

Give it time and keep up the good work. Do you drink calories? Sugary beverages? Get a step counting app for your phone and start tracking your activity. Shoot for 8k steps a day. I used to be a personal trainer and these are tricks that worked for just about everyone. Set a protein intake goal. Set a water intake goal, start with a half gallon. Let me know how that stuff works out

I don’t drink sugary things , i drink bubbly waters not sweetened, soy creamers in tea and coffee not sweetened as well. my hubby bought me a smart watch but i didn’t wear it as it was not reading my heart rate as my hand is tattooed and the reader on the bottom wasn’t able to read it through the ink. we had no clue thought i was dead when we first put it on me as it kept saying no data would work work on his wrist, it took us a bit to figure out it was my hand and wrist tattoo

phone step trackers are more accurate if you always have your phone with you also try to shoot for .8g of protein/lb of body weight and if you can, start doing some resistance training - even bodyweight exercises for now until you can join a gym :man_lifting_weights:
