I am currently 3 days sober from alcohol. I know it’s not a lot of time but I know I can make being sober last this time. My only worry is that when the summer time comes and when I go camping or concerts or sporting events or hanging out by a fire that the hardest time I will have in sobriety will be not consuming alcohol in these situations. Does anyone have any tips on how to not use alcohol in these situations?
You’re worrying about things that are months away. No need to create extra things to worry about, just get through today sober. You can worry about the future when it gets here.
Congrats on your first 3 days, and welcome to the forum! I think you have to see alcohol for what it really is; a deadly poison. Getting past all those glamorous Ads and marketing takes time, and a lot of work (reading, documentaries, assisting to sober programs like AA, Recovery Dharma, Smart Recovery etc - whatever suits you most). Like Derek mentioned in his previous post, focus on today, and then tomorrow “rinse and repeat”! Stay connected! ![]()
Really throw yourself into recovery now, learn as much as you can, practice different thought patterns as much as you can, so by the time the summer comes, the idea of drinking again is unthinkable.
Last year when I went camping I played cards to destact me.
Sobriety is easiest staying present, living one day at a time. Who knows what summer will bring. In early sobriety when I found myself thinking about a circumstance in the future, I’d look down at my feet and tell myself not to trip on the future. It was a little cue that helped keep me in the moment.
Thinking about those situations in the future is totally normal but not entirely helpful. When you get there we’ll help you get a plan together! Best wishes and welcome to TS ![]()
I had exactly the same fears, but when those things came around, I LOVED them. Knowing that I was sober and in control whilst watching everyone else get out of shape just strengthened my resolve even more. Don’t dread it, look forward to it. ![]()
It’s a way off down the road don’t try and do it all at once. I’ve done loata of things sober that in the past I would never have thought possible. Once you do a couple you realize it’s not so bad.. I call it flexing the sober muscle once you work that sucker a bit it gets stronger.
