I marked one year of sobriety on May 12th. As I was sitting here reflecting on the past year and how I got here, I decided I would write it out, and maybe (hopefully) it can give somebody here some hope that they can do it too. I’ll list them in order of when they happened to me.
Surrender: Admitting I was powerless over alcohol. Finally accepting that I cannot and will not ever drink like a normal person, and that’s ok.
Community: Having a community to support me when I’m struggling. I use AA, but there’s so many different sober communities. Find one and stay connected. This removes the isolation us addicts all crave at times.
Accountability: I needed accountability big time if I was going to get and stay sober. I did this through getting a sponsor and showing up to meet him every week, but once again there’s so many ways to hold yourself accountable if sponsorship isn’t your thing.
Introspection: Finding out who you are in sobriety, and how fears and insecurities led you to where you are today. Recognizing those thoughts and correcting them instead of drinking over them.
ODAAT One Day at a Time. For anyone out there who is new and scared because you can’t see the rest of your life with or without booze. I’ve been there too. All we have to do is not drink today and we’ll be OK.
Congrats on your journey thus far. One year is a mega accomplishment! And thank you for sharing what got you that far. I know im always curious what works for others. Again big congrats!!
