On August 17th, I’ll be one year sober. Although this journey has been rough, I feel like I’m in a better state of mind.
Do you guys have any ideas on what to do to celebrate? My wife asked and I told her I never thought about it. Part of me wants to do something but the other part wants to treat it like a normal day. Thanks in advance.
Congrats in advance Atony! Celebrate or not is personal I guess. I like to celebrate big milestones and this most certainly is one. Get myself a small or a big gift, eat out, do something cultural, whatever really. Do something that I enjoy so much more now I’m sober.
Whatever you do, celebrate it sober! Seems crazy, but people do relapse on their anniversaries. Thinking something like ‘I can have just one now’. Not true. Wishing you all success friend.
my first year my group got a cake and i spoke at the top table and im coming up for my 40 th cake but im sure a meal with your wife would be nice wish you well
One year is a HUGE milestone @Atony32! Way to do the thing I ordered a coin with the Tree of Life motif to commemorate my one year alcohol free.
I am excited for you to enter your second year. For me, the first year was about making it to my one year anniversary. The second year was a time of growth in other ways. I began to feel so normal going out socially and not drinking, I embraced my identity as a non drinker.
Now I no longer count in days (except when I post updates) and that was freeing in a way.
On my yearly anniversary I go to a meeting then out to dinner at a diner. I also pick up a chip at my first home group even though it’s over an hour away
Congratulations first of all. My counter has just notified me I’m now 11 months sober, which is what brought me here and this thread was at the top.
I’m looking forward to a first sober holiday in the sun in 12 days time. I intend to be looking and booking another one for next year on my first year sober date.
My life is infinitely better without calling at that pub every day; I can also afford holidays now.
Best wishes and congratulations once again.
Congrats on your time. A year is a big deal. The day of my one year was pretty dull honestly and I didn’t mind that, but my IOP group people got me a cake and had a little mini celebration a few days later which felt nice. A dinner with your wife would be great. At the end of the day it is just another day, but also it’s a milestone that a lot of people never reach so it’s good to give yourself some credit
