Online sponsor, how does it work

so I’ve been going to AA in the rooms before covid and ask people to be my sponsor but had no luck, I’ve still been doing AA zoom meetings and have been using a 12 step tool app. Part of the app has a sponsor request section and I’ve just plucked up the courage to send a request but now I’m afraid of what I got myself into. I work irregular hours and my partner already thinks I spend to much time online and talking to strangers so I don’t want a sponsor who sets all the rules and if they think I’m not trying leaves me hanging. TBH if anyone on here would like to sponsor me I would be grateful for that as some of you already kinda know what I’m about.

I’ve got a reply and we are in the same time zone, we have exchanged numbers and will chat on WhatsApp. The app I use to write my morning and nightly journals and all of my step 4 and 5 work that I’ve been doing on my own bc I had no one else is all now public to him. That’s scary in itself. He’s got 7 years of sobriety so I think this could be good for me.

yep just finished chatting to him and explained my circumstances and he’s cool with it so we are up and running. He’s got other sponsees some he puts through the steps so it’s looking promising. I’m in a great place mentally at the moment and could probably have done with this a bit sooner but it will just kinda solidify everything and put a full stop to the end of a terrible drinking career

Great topic! I have also been thinking about it, but wondered if it was even a thing. Happy to know it is. I use intherooms and there seems to be no sponsor option, unless I am missing it. I also join another meeting by zoom, that was recommended by another member here, usually just lurking tbh, and there is an email address to email. But because of work and time difference I only join the meeting once a week. I guess shooting a mail can’t do any harm though.

you don’t know until you try, if it doesn’t work out you can just keep trying until you get the right fit. I think I’ve got a bit lucky TBH. Where do you live BTW bc for some reason I thought you lived in Japan but I read something not long ago that surprised me :rofl::rofl:

In California, 8 hours behind your time zone. It’s important to have a sponsor that’s close to your own time zone. Everything will work out just fine my friend. I’m glad you took the step and getting a sponsor. Online or in person, that doesn’t matter, you’re headed in the right direction Paul and making progress. I’m proud of you. Keep up the good work. Here for you if you ever need anything.

So am I bc we chatted today and we just clicked, he has sponsored hundreds of people and his sponsor has 35 years sober and his sponsors sponsor who has passed away now had 64 years sober and that is what he wants to pass on to me, old school no messing about in the hope that one day he will phone me and say, Paul I’ve got a lad who could do with your help and I will guide you to sponsor him. He’s already given me daily tasks and times for weekly meetings and told me to trust him 100 % if I want what he has. Bc apparently I know fuck all about fuck all. I can’t wait

I’m not going to sit here and tell you all the ins and outs but I’m not allowed to talk at a meeting until we get to step 5, I’m to sit and listen. Well that’s going to fucking kill me bc I’ve always got something I need to say :rofl::rofl::rofl:

I’ve been to the one near me. They go through the steps in 4 meetings over the course of a month. Personally I liked working the steps with my sponsor better.

@Dolse71 hey Paul. I just downloaded the app. I am really liking it. Browsing through. There is a lot to discover and yes the idea of an online sponsor is really great. How did you chose one?
