Paracentesis and Ascites!

Hello,

I’m John and I am a grateful Alcoholic!

I was diagnosed with cirrhosis Nov 2023! It’s been a crazy 7 months and if anything I love being Sober. I have had 21 Paracentesis performed since and keep fluctuating between 1.5 and 5 liters a week. Some cycles I don’t need a procedure performed for weeks sometimes I need it weekly. All my liver levels have completely improved. My ALT/PHOS is still highly elevated but my Gastro is telling me I am a 7 on the Meld Chart. Way lower than needing a transplant or TIPS.

The Ascites is what we are battling the most and I have become a monk with diet. It’s crazy trying to monitor a 2000mg daily sodium intake. It’s helpful that I can cook and have found such a joy in cooking again “thanks sobriety”

Has anyone else had multiple Paracentesis’ ?

When I go to my procedures my Drs and staff are very encouraging about my improvement and talk about the thousands of people they have helped and that a majority like myself experience the Ascites just go away. Obviously the damage is done and lifestyle change is just that, for LIFE.

I am craving like experienced people, and also understanding how to gain weight after all the muscle loss and hernias caused by the Ascites!

I appreciate you all for being present for yourself and remember to always be selfish in your recovery!

Good for you John! Sounds like you have been working hard on your recovery (in body and mind) and you are seeing results :+1: I haven’t grappled with the same things exactly so I don’t have personal experience to share, but there’s lots of folks here on Talking Sober who have been through similar things; you’ll find them eventually. Welcome to Talking Sober! :innocent:

Hi there, welcome to the forum.

I have not experienced this but I know that good practices are

Low to no salt. Use spices instead.
No processed food, cook from scratch anything from land air or sea
Eat the rainbow, lots of dark leafy and cruciferous plants. Protein should be a side portion to a huge plate of veggies.
Minimise any use of NSAIDS if possible
Eat as much bitter food as you can; swiss chard, chicory or endive.
Drink water, filtered tap. Don’t go for fizzy.
Exercise where you can
Sleep as well as you can and maybe on your left side if possible.
BREATHE

Good luck and I’m rooting for you. :+1:t2:
