Little Amsterdam walk. Already a bit busier in town, but still doable. Beautiful day.

I love fresh snow in a city. It’s all quiet, people slow down for a minute.

Until it all turns into some disgusting mud in the afternoon :see_no_evil_monkey:

It’s in the center of Brussels. If you zoom in, you can barely see the Atomium on the horizon.

Menno, I’m curious - in those photos of the houses, what is the davit or winch or crane projection on the false front roof tops? Is that a common feature in Amsterdam, or of a particular architectural period?

It’s a common feature since the beginning of the town in the middle ages. The building I live in is from 1988 and still has one. Originally used to take commercial goods to the storage on the top floor/attic, later to take furniture and other stuff in and out of houses, as the Amsterdam (older) staircases are very steep, narrow and have crazy angles. Only recently have ladder lifts taken over this job. As illustration here’s my dad, on the right, helping a friend move house in the 1970’s. he was an intelligent man but a total klutz, it’s a wonder he didn’t drop that box on his own head. Or on his toes, wearing sandals also a great idea
BTW, the thinner rope, held by another person, is essential to keep the load away from the windows below.

I’ve been thinking about how I had to smash our box spring from the queen bed and tip it at an angle and scrape up the woodwork to get the thing upstairs - and now that moving out of this house is on the 5 year plan, how am I going to get it out? That sort of crane arrangement would be spot on, if the house were built for it. I love that early 1970’s vibe in the photo - the friend’s shirt, the small cars, the sunglasses and sandals!
