Aha there we are! In Dutch both a pie and a tart are called a taart (my sister’s appeltaart for instance). Thanks for enlightening me @Matt.

Hmmm yes. Language is a factor here. “Tarte” in French is pie - and yet “tart” in English is cheesecake - and since so much delicious food is French.
I don’t know. We’re walking on pretty shaky ground here. Cheese-“cake” or apple-“pie”… I don’t even know what’s up or down anymore.

So many of us use cheesecake (or appeltaart) as pie: it’s sweet, we enjoy it after a meal, or as a treat. It’s circular, it’s cut into slices.
And there’s that great American saying:
If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.
I would say the Americans have got it right here. There’s only one reasonable conclusion.
