Podcasts or Youtube

I’m always on the lookout for resources or people that can help with overcoming addiction. While out walking it suddenly popped into my mind that the actor Terry Crewes is a recovering PMO addict (I had completely forgotten) and has done loads of interviews and podcasts where he discusses his journey with addiction and recovery. I’ve started rewatching them.

So does anyone have any suggestions for any other podcasts, or youtubers, books etc… that talk about addiction? Not just in the PMO catagory but in any forms of addiction and sobrierty

I like scientific stuff, so I’ve just discovered psychiatrist, Dr. Anna Lembke on Spotify. She’s an expert on dopamine (and other brain chemicals), and she specializes in addiction.

She’s also a recovering behavioral addict herself, which makes her very empathetic and relatable.

Finally, about her, she wrote a book called Dopamine Nation, which I find to be quite direct and insightful…

I also like this guy, Dr. Andrew Huberman. I’ve watched a lot of his goal setting content on the past. He also has some great episodes on addiction. He has a couple of official YouTube channels (Andrew Huberman - @hubermanlab & HL Clips - @hubermanlabclips - which are his ‘shorter’, more bite sized edits at around 15-30 minutes each).

None to add at the moment, but this is a great idea, and a thread I hope gets populated a bit more, there are some very insightful people on this planet willing to share, doesn’t even need to be addiction related. I often find it motivating how much some people manage to achieve in life.

I’d say this is the podcast that made it all click for me.

They talk a lot about something called “limbic friction” so I won’t repeat everything, but here’s the idea I apply every day now, and is working.

Limbic friction is that feeling of not wanting to do something: get out of bed, taking an ice cold shower, do your workout, clean a dirty litter box, whatever it is it’s resistance to action.

It’s the same feeling you get when you have a craving that you want to resist but reversed because you have to resist an action yourself. The way you practice saying NO to cravings is by getting your reps in by saying YES to other difficult things (that are good for you that you don’t want to do). It’s literally the same system. The only thing is, you lose that progress when you get soft and lazy, and stop practicing. Then you’ll be rusty and unprepared when a craving comes along if it does, which it is wise to assume it will.

Anyway that’s my daily strategy. I’m not perfect about it but I try to get better every day. So far, so good. I can’t believe how well it’s working either, I feel like a fool for not realizing this sooner.
