Eric…I could Google travel tips…but why when I have you! We are traveling 7 hours next week and are bringing the Three Stooges with us. Gunny will be fine. Tony is 8 months old so he is more flexible. Rosie, at 6, isn’t going to be happy. Not comfortable letting them out and about. We are driving my Volvo S60 sedan which isn’t large at all. They will be in their carriers. I’m bringing lots of cleanup supplies and towels in case. I have a travel litter box. If they seem OK and are sleeping we are going to motor on. But they will have to get out of their carriers at least once. I’m thinking when we walk Gunny they can stretch their legs in the back seat. Or more likely I let them out so Roe can hiss right to Tone’s face. Any tips?
Do you have window locks? Keep the window locks engaged. Paws can open electric windows
We use to do Austin to south padre island 6 hours in the car and back then all the cats stayed in their carriers.
Ear plugs might be helpful for a whining kitten.
We also line the back seat with a familiar blanket.
Alice has her familiar pillow.
We keep a tiny cat bowl for water and pour a little bit at a time.
Minnie doesn’t like music. So we don’t get to listen to music. We bring ear buds.
Maybe cover the cat carrier with a blanket.
Have you heard of the Feliway Spray? We spray that on the blanket and or little bed in the cat carrier it’s suppose to be calming. Does it work? I don’t know. But we do it. And I like to have the cat carriers in the house for a couple of days before travel.
Good luck

I would of course defer to Eric . On the other hand if I was traveling seven hours with my cat I think I will just keep the cat in the crate for seven hours. I would check with my veterinarian. For instance last week I was worried about my cat because there was not much in the litter box for 24 hours, I made an appointment. And then the 15 hours before I took her in there was nothing in the litter box. But everything was fine. It was just feline I don’t know what to call it. For me it seems like there would be more error in taking her out of her crate and then hoping that she would actually urinate and then trying to get her back into the crate and possibly not being able to. Those are my thoughts on it. Happy travels. I have a friend who travels with her cats a lot six hours and she just keeps them in the crate.
When I was young I used to travel with three cats and a pick up truck with the windows rolled down. They would go underneath the pick up truck seat and stay under there the whole time. They were used to being transported… Those were the days my friend.
Good point.
Ideally if you could have a crate / cage Big enough for a litter box and a little food water dish. I know lots of places that board have very small little cages for the cats. It could possibly sit on the backseat with some support underneath it
I think Eric’s system is great and wonderful and awesome. They ( all ) have it figured out and it works for them. I’m not being critical of what he does at all.
I don’t know if it’s a system. . And my pictures look maybe great and like we’re having fun. But it’s not all fun and games. It’s pretty stressful. But the dogs do like the drive thru burgers at Carls Jr
And we generally get a good laugh about the cats.
And one of these days free Puppachinos from Starbucks, right? I have an escape artist if I tried to get out she would be out. I super admire y’all for what you do.
Great suggestions! I bought Feliway from Chewy just last week. They each have a blanket. Good idea about covering the crate with a blanket. Less stimulation. I’ll bring there water bowls. I have small ones. I really wish I didn’t have to bring them. But they’re going. I’ll take pictures!
I would never have brought Rosie’s brother (passed last October) in the car for that long. A trip to the vet for anxiety induced cystitis would have been a given. I wish I had a small crate instead of carriers. But, they wouldn’t do well together so I would need 2. Maybe some day. Rolled down windows and no carrier?? You and kitties were living on the edge!!
Car is way too small. We brought Tony and his sister Alice to Florida in a crate in our van and it worked out great. But we are driving to the mountains and the van is kinda old. I want to make it there!
Hi Maxie.
Your dog
I want to rub that belly. Give him a pet from me.
I always love seeing Max.
And you too. MAXIE.
Thanks Eric! I was thinking the other day how much Max has changed over the year. He’s always been sweet, but didn’t really understand the petting or attention I showed. He couldnt walk backwards, didn’t know what to do with toys. Goes to the bathroom outside but has no desire to walk. That’s why I think he was a puppy mill stud, living in a crate. He’s probably a ‘designer’ dog, a Maltipoo (Maltese Poodle) it would explain a lot.
But now he absolutely loves to be petted, he will back into me on the couch to get me to continue. He loves being brushed and is unbelievable with me trimming his coat. Luckily he can’t see that I’m not very good at it. He’s such a happy boy and I’m so proud of him.
Pretty girl.
Love those eyes and she looks really soft.
Did Georgia steal your hair tie?
My wife’s hair ties are not safe in our house. If she leaves one lying around forget about it.
Hair ties are exhausting!
