Why are frozen waterfalls sometimes blue? For the same reasons that glaciers are blue… the red and yellow parts of white light are absorbed by the ice, leaving only the blue light scattered throughout. The longer it takes for light to travel through ice, the more blue it appears. In simpler terms, if the ice is thin, all light passes through it. If it’s thick and compact, mostly blue light makes it through. Frozen blue waterfalls are one of my favorite things about winter.
Very cool! Blue light has a higher frequency than red light. Because red light has much less energy in it, the ice literally absorbs it. I love the science of nature! This totally belongs in the Random Facts Thread!
