Yes, they are protected here. They like the warmer weather and move around once our winter (as it is) is over. They are gentle creatures, but we have seen gopher tortoises fight and they can be fierce!
The have burrows, which are fun to keep a look out for.

Pretty much deserted here. They just ordered no new rentals til it’s over. I love it but alot of revenue lost.
Enjoy the solitude on the beach. I got mine out here in the woods. Your weather is probably more inviting though. But we are very sunny. But dry and cold. Well 40’s. Might make it to 60 this week. Heat wave🤪
It hit 90 I think yesterday but mostly in the 80s. I wouldn’t mind a visit to cooler weather once in awhile! I do miss the fall weather in New England.
