It gets loads better, but it does take time. It is truly an incredible series of moments when that phase of life ends and a new one begins. ![]()
It took a lot of research but I was able to get an appt. next week with an OB/GYN who specializes in perimenopause/menopause to check my hormone levels.
My mom has only really been helpful in giving me a timeline of when the changes started happening for her. She’s 76 so science has come a long way since she was in her perimenopause phase. I was able to talk to the owner of the CrossFit gym that I go to and the nutritionist (both women in their late 40’s) and they were both able to calm me down. They just said to start with my hormone level testing.
I restarted my vitamins about two weeks ago. I have a bad habit of taking my vitamins for a good six months then stopping then restarting.
It gets pricey after a while! And I’m using this Mexican shampoo my mom and tía (aunt) swear by. ![]()
Either way, I just want answers because my hair is shedding like crazy.
I’m starting to look at wigs to be prepared for the worst. ![]()

I had my appt. with the ob/gyn and I love her.
She took the time to actually listen to me. We talked through my history, my family’s history, and my current symptoms. She also asked me about any history of depression. Yeah, I have my periods where I feel low but it’s mainly when life’s stressors are kicking my ass. I usually am able to pull out of it. I mentioned to her that since I’ve been sober, I’ve been in a better place mentally. She was so proud of me. ![]()
I didn’t need any more labs because the ones I did with my PCP back in April sufficed. And she didn’t recommend hormone testing since hormones are always fluctuating and testing won’t really tell us anything. She did say that I am within the age range of very early perimenopause and because of that, HRT isn’t an option.
She did however present birth control as an option to alleviate my perimenopause symptoms and stabilize my hormones. I’ve never been on birth control so I’m nervous. She had to talk me through it.
We’re starting off at a low dosage. It’s all going to be experimental for the next three months but I’m hoping that this will help.
I’m just relieved that I had an expert explain everything to me and work on a treatment plan. I feel better and calm. ![]()

I am seriously following your story. I am 40.5 years blah lol Definitely empathize with your situations in a lot of ways. I have, however, all but swore off doctors (necessary evil, I know but I have not been since I got fully sober as they are how I ended up fighting opiates… I digress. I never thought of the low dose bc. I can get that over the counter (as I just did for my daughter while between insurance and the us sux) Maybe it’s another step. I also have assure coils that are probably the worst thing I have ever done to my already abused body.
I completely understand your point of view. A lot of physicians are quick to hand over pills to patients and send them on their way.
I will for sure keep the thread updated on my journey. I’ve been talking to other 40-something year old women at my gym as well. One in particular, late 40’s, who has been on BC (IUD) but she’s now starting to feel the effects of perimenopause for about two years now. She’s going to try some natural remedies.
Again, I’ve never been on BC so I’m hopeful it will help since my body has never relied on the hormones of BC.
My doctor recommended I start taking it on my first day of my next period which is in approximately 6 days. We’ll see. I’ll be a guinea pig for the next three months.
I plan to write everything down.
I am seriously interested. I found that with enough of my own action I can figure it out more holistically. Just a whole lot of trial and error. I had an IUD as well. Then I had my youngest, stupid coils and now it’s a nightmare of guessing what caused what lol. Thank you for being so open and honest.. thank you
