"Recovery: Freedom From Our Addictions" Book Club Discussion

Hi all. I’ll start things off with 5 questions to get things going. Feel free to pose your own questions. Here we go!

  1. Share a favorite quote or part of the book.
  1. If you had the chance, what one thing would you ask or say to Russell Brand?
  1. What has the book made you realize about yourself, if anything?
  1. From step 4: Share some things that are “fucking you up or have fucked you up and do not lie”.
  1. Rate the book between 1 and 4. 4 equals thumbs up. 1 equals thumbs down.

I can answer the step 4 question at the moment, I have to be honest, the only thing that Is messing with my head at the moment is my porn addiction, I can relate to Russel brand on that one. I have been watching this stuff for 22 years, and the dopamine rush I get from it, is the reason I use it. I am addicted.

I related to the part when he was canoeing and realized he was afraid of approaching the strangers. The way he made assumptions based on their appearances and realized he could not rely on these assumptions. I’m often intimidated easily. I would give this book a reluctant 3. It was helpful and insightful. I was surprised by his humility, I had gathered my impression of him from tv appearances and I did not like him at all. I am fairly well read with a college degree, yet this book felt a lot like trying to read a Master’s thesis. It could have been, perhaps, “dumbed down” or put more in layman’s terms and been more easily understood.

Ok. Here comes my answers in one long post…

  1. Favorite quote: page 205 … “We all live in our minds and we have allowed them to become poorly tended”. — imo so true about me

  2. I’d ask Russell Brand… “Besides helping others, what kinda ego stuff prompted you to write and sell this book?”.

  3. I realized, by reading this book, there is hope for me. For me, it’s clear I need AA or some kinda 12 step program, but I have refused to show up anywhere thus far. I need face to face connection and support.

  4. My impulsivity (desperate desire for instant relief) and self pity/poor me crap keeps fucking me up. Thinking I had to earn love and attention from my parents fucked me up imo.

  5. I rate the book a 4. However, dude is obviously bright, and thus used a lot of “big words”. I’m no dummy, but dang if I didnt have to really focus at times to keep up with him. He’s friggin’ smart imo…like surprisingly brilliant imo. I’d like to pick his brain and vice versa.

Well we’ve had 2 suggestions so far. I’ll literally write down the titles and randomly pull one “from the hat”. Still seeking suggestions. I figured I’d post the next book selection at the end of the day…I’ll say by 9PM CST.

Screaming YES in response to that question. Oy.
