Recovery in an antagonistic society

I got sober in September of 2022. I’ll have four years in a couple weeks. I just wanted to let people know that I had to leave AA completely and disconnect myself as much from society as I could to make it this far in my journey.

Everyone, and I mean everyone I encountered turned on me once I got sober. Nobody wanted me to make it. People tried every tactic they could drum up to get me to drink and drug again.

I lost my house in sobriety, I lost the remainder of my family, and I lost my career in sobriety. None of it happened in addiction.

Sobriety is an individual journey in my opinion. Nobody can do it for you and nobody can help you. You either want it or you don’t. You either believe in yourself or you don’t. You either believe you’re worth something more or you don’t. There’s no medicine, there’s no meeting, there’s no psychologist.

By the way, I got my finances straightened out and I am safely retired and will be financially okay. I figured it out and did it all myself.

I got my driver’s license back after not driving for 5 years. I fought like hell with DMV and went to my Pennsylvania state representative but I finally got it back. Myself.

I fought my family’s high powered lawyer by myself and ended up getting a fair half of the house they forced me out of. I did it myself.

I was able to successfully dig my way out of these holes and fight my way back because I was sober. Sobriety. Sobriety is everything.

I use my resentment as motivation. I’ve learned how to master it instead of it mastering me. It’s a powerful motivator. It works for me. I accept the challenge of life on life’s terms every day when I wake up. And I’m thankful to be alive and sober and able to fight this battle!

This journey is yours and yours alone. Don’t kid yourself. There’s plenty of people that want to see you fail. Put your faith in God and yourself only. No one and nothing else.

I did it myself too, but I could not have done it without restoring some faith in people. Some people of my own choice. For me the opposite of addiction is connection and though I did it myself, I could not have done this all alone.

Obviously we come from different backgrounds and histories and I don’t know yours other than what you tell here. I always was alone and isolated in addiction, stuck in my own head and body. In sobriety I slowly learned to get out of there and meet the world.

Congrats on your nearly 4 years. We’re all on our own roads. I don’t believe in a god but I do believe in my fellow humans. At least some of 'm. Wishing you all the best.

I have heard that statement also. Connection is the opposite of addiction. Best of luck on your journey also. No matter what, don’t let them grind you down!

Reading your words kind of reminds me of David Goggins. He’s a former Navy Seal and a noted motivation personality…

His whole philosophy builds upon a basic foundation:

Life’s hard. Lean into it. Do hard things.

He makes no excuses, and does what is needed to accomplish his objective…

He sounds a lot like you; and I respect the self determination.

Thank you. I mean that. I want others to believe real change comes from within. It doesn’t seem like many people believe that. It’s a lack of faith and self-confidence.

Wow, sounds like uv been through alot in sobriety. I reallt applaud u on staying true to urself and pushing thru all the hardships, to get to where u are today.

I do agree that, at the end of the day, we have to want this for ourselves. A lot of people thought I wouldnt make it. I even thought I wasnt going to make it at a few points lol But, something inside of me just wouldnt give up on a better life.

At the same time, I also needed people to help me recover. I dont think I couldve done this on my own. TS was and still is my main support for recovery. I think its about finding the right people to have in our corner

Welcome to this community Dean! Glad ur here
