Recovery - The Art of Spiritual Living

I am currently reading a recovery book named Recovery, The Twelve Steps as Spiritual Practice. I am thoroughly enjoying it, and it has opened my eyes to the fact that the 12 Steps and associated groups are my spiritual practice. I am a Swiss Anabaptist by denomination and creed, but I find wisdom and truth in all of the different spiritual practices of the world. And thus find the process and practice of the 12 Steps a perfect spiritual path for my sanity, spirituality and physical well-being. I would be interested in hearing from others viewpoints on the subject of the 12 Steps and and how it effects their spiritual practice.

A human being is part of the whole called by us the universe, a part limited in time and space. Humans experience themselves, their thoughts, and feelings as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of their consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of love and compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.

At it’s subtlest level, we feel a tightening, a tensing, a sense of closing down. Then we feel a sense of withdrawing, of not wanting to be where we are. That is the hooked quality. That tight feeling has the power to us into selfdenenigrattion, blame, anger, jealousy, and other emotions that lead to words and actions that end up poisoning us.

The real gift of Twelve Step recovery is not simply the cessation of our harmful behavior, but the end of our harmful thinking. For it is ending harmful thinking that is at the heart of spiritual growth, awakening, and recovery.

I have a god of my own understanding who will take whatever I need from any form of religion or belief system. It filters my mind with positive affirmations and this then leaves my body through kindness to others.
That’s the theory, turns out people can still piss me off :joy:
