Relapsing/social

I was wondering if relapsing would consider social drinking? Or is it a matter of self opinion? Like going out with friends, but not overdoing it. Not looking at it as “I get to drink yay” but generally just wanting to have a good time with friends.

That’s not a relapse. It sounds like you aren’t really wanting to quit drinking in the first place. A relapse is only when you are trying to get sober then go back to drinking. If sobriety is your goal though, then that is 100% a relapse. Relapse’s aren’t really a subjective thing.

If you’re wanting suggestions on leading a sober social life then you’re in the right place

edit - I just went back and read your first post. There’s a zero percent chance you will ever moderate your drinking. Stick around and get sober. Your life literally depends on it.

Thank you so very much for the speedy reply. I am 100% committed to quitting. I was genuinely curious. Some people I’ve known social drink now, but we’re just as bad as I.

I don’t think there is such a thing as “just social drinking/using/etc” for us addicts and alcoholics. There are ways (once we’re deeper and stronger in our sobriety) to socialize with our friends, but it is going to look different from what it used to be. We can’t drink, period. And some of those friends may not be in the picture if they cannot 100% support your sobriety.

Keep working on your sober muscles. You will be able to live a fulfilling social life, AND it will be a sober one. I read your first post and was extremely touched. Bookmark it and read your story if you ever feel that commitment to sobriety slipping. You got this, one day at a time.

I want to cry, I didn’t realize how many people, especially strangers, cared. This is an amazing community. Wow, I am literally without words. I’ve always been scared to share my story, but just being here shows me I can share with others. It makes me know I can definitely go to an AA meeting and people would ACTUALLY care. It’s really touching. Thank you ALL so much for your advice and kind words. I don’t know what to say.

I now know, I can talk without judgement. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

There is no such thing as social drinking. For nobody. Either you drink alcohol or you don’t. People without addiction occacionally drink alcohol in social gatherings, know when they have enough, change to other beverages, that’s it. People with addiction drink alcohol to get drunk, to spare withdrawals, to get a certain effect from using alcohol or simply because their body needs it to function because, you know, addicted. Once you stepped out of active addiction hamsterwheel, it’s no drinking. never. you are a pickle now. you don’t turn back into a cucumber just because you leave the glass.
stay sober, it’s better and more fun on the sober side of socializing

@RandyPadgett I’m surprised you’re asking this my friend, if you are trying to stay sober and you drink alcohol isn’t that in your opinion relapsing? come on man.

If I could ‘just drink socially’ ‘not overdo it’ I would happily be doing that in real life and never have had any reason to search out this app. But I can’t drink socially’, I do overdo it and therefore did search out this app and get sober and any alcoholic drink is a relapse.

You can have a good time with friends, but you have to learn how to do that with a ginger ale in your hand. And after getting some decent sober time under your belt.

You are joking with this question, right? You we’re on your death bed! All because of alcohol. You have been given a second chance. Don’t let alcohol put you in the grave. As that is where alcoholism takes, us to the grave.

There is no moderation. One is never enough and neither is the bottle.
Please take care of yourself. Maybe start going to meetings in person or online. It is not easy keeping this demon in check. But it can be done there are many here that we can draw inspiration from. Keep getting that head to the pillow sober.

I used to think that this was something that I could do if I could only put the right parameters around my drinking. I would start out that way and slowly spiral out of control until I hit a point again where I saw it was a problem. I realize now that it was always a problem.
