Replacement

What’s your go to snack/drink to replace the urge of drinking alcohol or smoking?

At the beginning of my sobriety I was snacking like a crazy, especially at evenings  My favourite were salty sunflower seeds. My tongue was getting numb from all that salt xD It’s super addictive. About drinks, I’m lucky I don’t really like sodas and I can enjoy NA beer from time to time without getting triggered. So mostly water. I noticed since I stopped drinking alco my coffee intake doubles

I try to snack reasonably healthily to fend off any urges - protein bars, little low fat Babybel cheeses, Skyr fat free yoghurts - and plenty of green tea.

I love salty sunflower seeds! They’re so addictive I could spend hours munching them. Had to cut down on them and the salty nuts too.

To answer the question, the first few months I indulged my sugar cravings with chocolate, ice coffees, sugary coke, flavored lemonades and different types of cordial in my sparkly water.

I used to end my nights with a bottle (or 5) of wine. So had to replace the ritual of it all. Now it’s chamomile tea with lemon and honey. And I have this whole skincare routine I do every night without fail. (It’s really just brushing my teeth, cleaning my face, and plastering some moisturiser on, but it’s the ritual of it that’s helping me stay on track.).

Ice cream! And at first, I was fine with it because the alternative was death but now I have to quit that because they told me I am pre-diabetes

My diet did a complete 180° when I quit. I used to reach for anything but water during my drinking so I’ve been trying to catch up on that. I think I’m still dehydrated 8 months later! In the beginning I craved milk a lot too. Probably bc I was lacking certain nutrients that alcohol leached from my body.

For food, all I ate while drinking was salty carbs and cheese, but now I mostly crave fruits and healthy proteins, like eggs and tuna. It’s really crazy to me that I’m a polar opposite of what I was for so long.

@Dan531 - Those Aha commercials drive me nuts! I mute or change the station when they come on  Glad they taste good to you :+1:

Drink: loads of different herbal infusions, and some sugar free sodas
Snack: I try not to snack too much. After 8 years I still use toothpicks for the smoker’s hand to mouth habit. Sometimes a lollipop. By now my hair style is the same as Kojak too.

Welcome to the community Melissa

For me – my replacements are carbonated water, ice cream and pistachios

Good post! I’m on Day 23 and have been craving sugar and salty snacks. Trying to take it easy. My typical day is like today:

  1. English muffin with egg, cheese, and butter and a large side of strawberries.

  2. Tuna sub with cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onion and a small side of sour cream and onion chips.

  3. Tuna salad with veggies and a side of yogurt with fruit and honey.

Then tonight I had some dark chocolate. I have sunflower seeds but didn’t break them open. Thankfully there’s no ice cream around. Lol

I drink 3 coffees in the a.m., water all day, and one soda/or fizzy per day -whatever is handy. I also have one glass of milk per day.

A lot of people have cut a straw into three pieces and stuffed cotton ball in the end of the straw. Held it in their hand and smoked it, unlit of course.
A lot of people chew a lot of gum for smoking alternative.
Sucking on hard candies.
Eating low-calorie food.
You could carry a ballpoint pen in between your fingers a lot.
Or as was said above, chew on a toothpick .
Take a deep breath.
Taking up a hobby, like knitting or crocheting, playing puzzles is good too
There is a thread here I think it’s called. What are you drinking now and it has lots of ideas of different drinks to drink as a substitute for alcohol.

I don’t watch television either. I’ve only heard the radio commercials on Pandora. I can only imagine how much more annoying it is with visuals :scream:
